Thought I read somewhere that the Z3 was a bit of a mix of bits from other E36 s like the front suspension components were off a E36 coupe and the rear was off a 316 compact , is this right or arnt the parts interchangeable with any other model?
Your right, your model type is called e36/7. What ever part your looking for enter you vin in to realoem the last seven numbers of the vin then go look for your part when you click on the part number it will then go to a listing of all the cars that part will fit, euro and us.
E30, Z3, and 318ti share similar rear suspension layout, a single trailing link swing arm.
Additionally, the front suspension layout of an E36/Z3 is nearly the same as an E30. A strut with a Forward Lower Control Arm. The major difference is the strut to spindle interface. No interchangeable parts however.
Some say that the E30M3 FLCA is interchangeable common E36 and 1995M3. The E30M3 FLCA has solid outer ball joints, common E36 and common Z3 have rubber isolated outer ball joint. The 1995M3 and 1996+M3 both have solid outer ball joint FLCA but different geometry.
