We had some hi-end customers (ie...driving long-bodied 760's...) de-badge due to perceived targeting by accident scammers. Low-rent losers hoping to get in an accident with a cash cow. I think they were just more paranoid than usual and I was surprised at how common the thought process was enlisted.

I believe the correct terminology in this instance is ///M-poster.

All these knowledgeable BMW posters, and nobody mentioned the extra 25+ HP you get by putting a ///M badge on the trunk of a non M car!!

Hmmm...I wonder why the part database has S337a (M sport Pkg option code) listed for this ///M emblem?

If your car doesn’t have an ///M engine then don’t put on any extra badges, simple as that. Not sure why it’s such a hard concept.

I replaced my ///M5 badge with AMG E55 Quattro.
i feel like the best compromise in situations like this is to use an Msport like naming system.
Instead of an isolated or M5 badge, put an M badge in front of your current model numbers, but try to refrain from doing it unless you get some good upgrades overall.
like good suspension upgrades with sway bars and upgraded bushings and brakes? sure, put an M infront of that 540i to make an ///M-540i
i think a raw M5 badge should only be for an actual M5
Looking for an e39 Touring black carpet set, including the rear cargo cubbies and side sections!
ALSO looking for 540i 6speed manual transmission sets (2001+ pedals with switches, driveshaft, gearbox), for the 6speed swap! Probably not for a while....

Uh. No.
Badging any old upgrades w/ M is still pose-a-riffic.
By that argument I should be able to easily put an M5 on my car. Nope. No M motor, no M suspension, etc.
I might see that OK if you whacked actual M-sport parts onto the car (and a lot of them... say you did a whole M5 suspension and interior but not the motor...) but still... its reaching for an excuse to make your car look like something it is not.
"M" as a brand and a badge doesn't mean "generically modified and sported up!", it means "containing a significant package engineered by the M motorsport division of BMW", simple as that. If you don't have that, you don't have that, and to badge it that way is clearly trying to make it appear to be something that it is not.

What's it make you if you use M bits on a non M car without the badge? Are you a poser or just want some go fast stuff your car didn't come with?
My car came with "M" badge on the steering wheel and OEM shift knob. From the factory. I added the "M" door strips like the ones posted above (not M5), because i liked them. Sorry Q, i dont have 337..but i do have 704 and 710. If i would have done "Motorsports" badge on the strips, i would have felt like a poser since the car was never optioned for that. That's my personal opinion. I'm also considering the M door sills (NOT M5), so i'm sure i'll be called a poser than =)
Would i put an M5 badge on ANYTHING other than an M5? nope. Ive seen some NICE E39's with serious power, and the first thing I think about is the M5 badge that doesn't belong. Even on my E28 535is, i had an "M" plaque on the front grill that came from the factory.
I also remember when E39 M5'ers would rebadge with a 518i emblem or something. Try going on M5baord and see what they think about NON M's using the M5 badge.....
also, i would NEVER call my car other than what it is, a 528i with sport package. I've heard people wrongly say M5 package or M package etc etc...

Unfortunately BMW themselves seem to have stopped caring, like with the ///M235i/240i, the X5M, and the ///M760li xDrive... It's up to us now to enforce the sanctity of the ///M.

Oh pleez. Don't be XXXXX (we need strikeout font tags) ridiculous.
Your car is not an Msport, so that assplains that. Good lord youve been hanging out here for years now and still think you have a 2002 Msport? That's WHY your car isn't an Msport. Yes yes I know some option shows up with a M description but it is NOT the proper true Msport package. This has only been explained about 9,000 times on Bimfo alone over the years.
Yeah. Not 'stopped caring'. Its just that the brand stewardship got stolen from the Motorsport M division and glommed on by the soulless douchey marketeers (I say with full disdain as a marketing and strategy professional..) I'd bet you anything the engineers in M who develop the REALLY GOOD STUFF are equally cynical and disdainful of what the marketeers are doing w/ the brand. The Quandts basically want it to be mega-mass-market car company that rivals VW and all its divisions for numbers, and so they are doing whatever it takes to just sell as many cars as they can and could give a crap about the old BMW philosphy... "Ultimate Driving Machine" now is just a slogan to help sell nice-but-hardly-remarkable electronic steering cars and front wheel drives and SUV's and anything and everything else to the masses.
Now some of those M models are semi-legit (the M235i isn't a full M car sure, and having driven one on autocross, its not mindblowing but its also not a shabby car either and well better that the basic Sport car...), and they kind of have established a somewhat consistent scheme where the "M_regular_model#" or "Model#_M" means "not a full M-engined car but one with a unique and above-regular-sport set of packages... So there is somewhat of a logic there (and its the same logic that they used to use with "M Sport" vs "full M car"), and I do agree, some of the 'M-light' models are pretty weak.
But yeah, absolutely, they start throwing the M on lots of quite non-M-engineered crap just to sell it to the rubes. Audi did exact same thing with "S"... they started using "S-line" which means "mostly cosmetic flash pack"... and the S cars themselves got softer and with minimal true-content-additions for you rmoney... At least they sorta use the excuse that they developed the "RS" to be the real-deal... Sorta makes sense though still diluted and the current "S" cars are basically equivalent to those "not full M" BMW models...
This BTW is SUCH and OLD WORNOUT F_____ topic, it should be in 'oil thread' category...

Same thing i was talking to my wife about. There was a time when "M" meant something other than clicking a box when you ordered a car. Even my little old E39 was the "cooler" version of the 528's when it was released.
When we had our '14 X1, it was M badged everywhere from the factory. Kind of nice, kind of annoying.

Now I have to debadge the rear deck lid so everyone will think it is a V8! Where is my dental floss.......

LMAO I love these kinds of threads.
If you wana know if you're a poser with a M badge on a non-M car.. there's an entire thread dedicated to shaming fakes/posers on m5board.

no, it's the actual msport touring package, one of three hundred yadda yadda, it's a 2003 model year, but it was built in late 02
but msport package on the touring had only cosmetic bits, and was still sold as an msport package equivalent to the sedan version
although it was pretty lazy on bmw's part at the time
