Yes the throttle cable is the easiest way to tell them apart. When looking into the engine bay, they are very hard to tell apart by looks, but they have a good number of difference in part numbers.
If the engine is out of the car, then you can check the engine number plate where you will see "25 6S 4" for a M52TUB25 or "25 6S 5" for a M54B25
