M52tu vs m54 identification

Hey, as they both have doubel VANOS, is the throttle cable for the 52 and vly by wire for the 54 the only tell tale sign . . .

I found this in another thread here:

Model year 2001 was the first year of the M54Bxx. In 2000, the current engines were the M52TUB25/B28.

TU = Technical Update, whatever the heck that was.

Yes the throttle cable is the easiest way to tell them apart. When looking into the engine bay, they are very hard to tell apart by looks, but they have a good number of difference in part numbers.

If the engine is out of the car, then you can check the engine number plate where you will see "25 6S 4" for a M52TUB25 or "25 6S 5" for a M54B25
