Just picked up a fairly nice, black, 83 today. Thanks to the moderate climate here in Portland, OR and the fact that this was an original California car, I should be able to really make a great car out of this one as time goes by. Really looking forward to learning a lot from this forum. Especially where to get parts!! Guess being new I can't post pics yet.
Welcome to the E21 Forum. It takes 10 or so posts to be able post pictures so post away. Check out E21 FAQ's and DIY's thread lots of good information and lots of topics covered.

Really excited about the project. The car has 242k on the odometer, but the three prior owners were all engineers, so the car was very well maintained. But, it's 38 years old. Stopped by my dealer to pick up some other stuff this morning and they said they don't have any techs left that can even work on it! Crazy.
Welcome! I’m from Portland also, and have a bit of an “In” when it comes to parts and stuff, so hopefully I can help out a bit from time to time!

Thanks! I was cracking up this morning, was down at Portland BMW getting a few little bits for the 330 and they said that they don't have anyone in service that could work on an e21 anymore. Wow. We'll have to get together for a drink one of these days.
Select the year, make and model of your car on realOEM.com and bookmark it. I visit this site regularly.

welcome to the forum.
Thanks, will do.
In terms of where to get parts... autohausAZ, ECStuning, FCPEuro, Pelicanparts are all great options.
Look for a classic car garage that handles BMW's for work your not going to do-some here do on site work for members, other than that this forum can answer any question on these cars. FCPeuro is preferred when they have the parts as they issue a lifetime warranty on there parts,,this is outstanding.

Check rockauto for parts. They have a surprising amount of stuff and its usually cheap.
Just a note on realoem.com - realoem does not sell parts, the prices listed are outdated 'suggested retail prices'. We use the realoem for part numbers, hardware sizes, hose lengths, pictures, etc...
Here's a link to the electrical manual for your '83. 4Mb pdf file. Please download/save a copy now.

Welcome to the e21 group and congratulations on '83!
Like the others said order online it's a lot cheaper. Also if yiubstar tearing apart parts of the car you might consider waiting for the parts to arrive or keep detailed documentation of what went where. A lot of parts will come from Germany and take some time to arrive.
Again welcome and post a few pictures when you can!
MyBMW Habit- perfect name!
You just got the complete welcome packet- The electrical diagram (download), the DIYU/FAQ section, RealOem and the vendor list. Face book has some E21 groups on there, but the technical stuff happens here- lots of support and knowledge. Congrats and post so that you can share pictures.
welcome! these are fun little cars, you are going to love it.

If you’re ever in NE Portland, I know a shop that’s super honest, and a true enthusiast.

Welcome aboard! Let me give you my standard speech: If you have any doubt about the car's prior service intervals, go ahead and change out ALL fluids and filters. Not expensive and good for a baseline and good preventative maintenance. Looking forward to pics of the car. John
"Welcome Packet" is a good idea! Somebody standardize a packet

I'll add a PB image workaround thread to the "welcome packet", since 'mybmwhabit' just started a new thread asking about the PB fiasco:
