E38 750iL want to go back to the road

    Hello my friends,
    Long story short:
    I bought a 2001 e38 750il that have a problem with the automatic transmission.
I've replaced the DME, complete engine wiring harness, 5HP30 Automatic transmission, new gear selector (switch) and a new MAF.
I've charged both batteries and they shows about 12.6V with engine off and 13.6-8V with engine running.

Let's start with the big problem: the transmission stuck in "TRANS FAIL PROG".
My local workshop give up, has no clue what is the problem and me either.

Does Someone have any suggestions where should I look for?

    Thank you very much!

Please stop throwing parts at the problem. Doing so wastes money, doesn’t fix the problem and it angers the BMW goddesses.

Have the tranny computer scanned for codes. Report back.

Wow. When does the TFS message appear? When starting the car? Putting in gear? At a certain speed? Many variables, that do not involve the transmission or battery, that can cause this.

Did the local workshop have the proper software to run diagnostics on the various modules in your car? Did they try unplugging the ABS module and test drive it?

+1. You're going to need to get the car to a shop with a top-quality BMW diagnostic computer. This doesn't have to mean a dealership; many quality independent Euro shops have ISTA, or Autologic.
As Mayorchuck indicates, there are many things that can cause the EGS (trans computer) to go into limp mode.

What was the reason you replaced the DME? Did you replace BOTH of them, or only one? Has anyone checked the transmission computer for signs of wetness or corrosion? Cleaned the plugs with Wurth Contact Cleaner Oil?

First step is to read ALL the codes, from ALL the computers, with a BMW specific, top quality diag computer.

I replaced the parts mentioned because they (the BMW workshop) thought it's the problem. I replaced the engine wiring harness because they scanned with ISTA and got "no communication".
I will scanned the computers and review the codes here.

My biggest mistake is the thought: "this will solve the problem" and 5000$ already burn.

If I remember right, the gear display work good when the engine is off, and when I start the engine the gear display goes blank and TRANS FAILSAFE PROG shows.

I wrote DME by mistake, I mean EGS.

Has anyone used a BMW diag computer to read codes from the DMEs and the ABS? These computers can have codes which will immediately put the transmission into limp mode. Also, don't forget to check the KOMBI (Instrument cluster) for codes, and, after writing down everything you find in all those computers, delete all codes, then start the car again, then ReRead the codes in all modules.
If necessary to reset the first code, start the car twice, or drive it around the block. The first code that reappears is the clue.

I prefer not to drive the car because the transmission plates will wear.

When you have cleared ALL the codes from ALL the computers, you only have to do whatever is necessary to reset the first code, whether that code is in the DMEs, or the ABS, or the EGS. You have to converse with all these modules to figure out which is causing the issue.

I found some weird things. My instrument cluster doesn't lit (no light) and the fuel gauge sometimes shows half a tank and sometimes empty. (I filled it with 30L of fuel). Maybe the instrument cluster is bad? Anyway I am going to scan with BMW scanner 1.4 and will share the results soon.

    Thank you
