I need help on what wire goes where? Bought a new o2 sensor with 4 wires 2 white, one black, one gray. The wires on the e30 m10 118i has different colors, which is to what?
Cheers from Mike-Denamrk
Do you have your ETM for wiring color references????? I can take o photo of the o2 plug and wire colors if that can help me get the wire spliced.
ETM=Electronic Troubleshooting Manual ,Google wedophones bmw manuals and find your model ,Download the PDF it will be your friend once you get comfortable using it.
find the Fuel injection section and O2 diagram for wire colors to match your generic O2 wires to.

What wires are on your existing connector?

There is a green, a blue/green and a brown
Sounds like you have a 3 wire system. In this case
green/blue - O2 heater power
brown - O2 heater ground
green - signal (circuit completes through engine ground)
Your new one is
white - heater (power or ground) -- map one to green/blue
white - heater (power or ground) -- map the other to brown
black - signal -- map to green
gray - signal ground
How to deal with the gray wire
The old system grounds the signal through exhaust pipe to engine to chassis ground. A fourth wire was added to provide a more stable ground to the engine electronics. You can route that wire to any good chassis ground on the firewall. If you can tell me if you have a Jetronic, Motronic 1.0 or later Motronic 1.1/1.3 I could probably recommend a better location. However it might not be worth the extra work.

Wow what a help, thank you very much. Cheers from a 2002tii owner.
Sorry forgot to write that the 2002 has a e30 188i m10 with motronic, where do i find what type motronic it is?
When you say an e30 M10, I'm assuming you mean a Euro market 318i. These were made through 7/87 production. That means it's likely only Motronic 1.0. Do you have a separate idle controller computer? Then it's definitely Motronic 1.0. Otherwise it's M1.1/1.3 that don't have much functional difference.
Now with that said, are you sure it's not L-Jetronic? I wasn't aware the M10 ever got Motronic. I'm not familiar with Euro market cars to say with certainty. I thought the M40 with the distributor cap fixed at the front of the head got Motronic (spark and fuel control) while the M10 with a old style distributor got L-Jetronic (fuel only control).

You are completely right, it is a l-jetronic, so guess i still have to follow the same wire connection you wrote.
With an L-Jet system, run that ground wire to anywhere on the engine. That's where all the other injection components ground. The best place would be ground location G102. I don't specifically know where that is located other than the description in the ETM, "Top rear of engine." There should be a bunch of other wires already grounding there. There's also G101 which is described as "Top front of engine" and appears to be by the cold start valve. G101 only applies to "early production." "Late production" has everything ground to G102. Don't be surprised if you don't have G101. If you can figure out where G102 is, it's the best choice.

Well have at last time to put the probe to the 2002. But the green/gray has inner and outer wiring, do i connect both to the black?

I replied in your message, but for completeness...
The inner wire is the signal wire. The outer wire is an RF shield. Since this is the old chassis side, the shield should already be tied to ground somewhere but you should verify,
