    Time sert... need some help

    Didn't want to ask but...

My rear shock where it bolts to the control arm is completely stripped.

I bought 12X.1.5 tap and attempted but 0 progress

What size time sert would you guys recommend ?

Well you would need a timesert or helicoil for the bolts thread size. Thread insert taps are larger to accommodate the thread pitch of the insert you are using

If you have an m12x1.5 bolt you need a m12x1.5 insert. Don’t forget to get the correct drill size for the STI tap also

So would a 12x1.5 thread sert be about a 1/2 in size?

    Can I go standard?

You buy the heli coil or timesert kit it would either come with the correct drill bit or will tell you which size to buy. As far as standard size the shock mount will not know the difference

Alternatively you could try again to rethread. Maybe use a rethreader. Or try again with a tap. You have to get the angle just right on that bolt — it does not always go in at first try. Another thought would be to drill and tap for a larger bolt assuming your lower shock bushing liner could be enlarged to match. A used trailing arm is also an option.

Sometimes a longer bolt will catch threads that aren't borked.

Tried a longer bolt, didn't work.

Fastenal local to me has a thread insert kit with 12mm X 1.75. Thinking it should work the correct threaded bolt

Have you already refreshed your rear suspension bushings?

They are both going to have to same major diameter so no that won't work.

If you drill it through you could just tap it deeper.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

I went to fastenal and bought a 12mm bolt/nut and bit to drill it out so I could put a nut on the other end of the arm. The bolt I bought had a courser thread pitch and it ended up tightening very well with no drilling or modification.

Boosted all evening, feels great. Rear needs re-freshened desperately though

That's where I was headed with it.

If the arm is damaged, there's no better time to replace the arm,
swap all fresh ball joints/ bushing/ etc into each.

    You're fix sounds OK though.
The shock won't go anywhere, with a proper 10.9 GRADE bolt

    also, you are 328, correct?

    Yes, the car is 328.

It runs and drives fine (knock on wood). It just doesn't like to be beat on from a standstill but if the car is moving it seems to be fine.

I'm going to to do the rear as soon as I have some extra money.

The Konis feel great and the car handles good. Regretting going with the 5 series offset style 32's. Rubbing annoys the hell out of me

Hard to believe you stripped the full depth of the lower shock attach bolt

Is there enough material remaining to install a Timesert?

If he did no drilling of any kind, there's definitely enough to do a TimeSert.

I think it may have had issues when I bought the car. And the impact just made it worse.

I was able to make it work with a bolt with courser thread. Holding up fine. Will be good until I redo the entire rear

Time-Sert makes oversized inserts as well.

So if it is oblonged or oversized you can still use an insert and get back to the original thread size/pitch
