Hello all! I am happy to join back! I have just bought a 2001 740il from my father who took great care of this car. I have and issue that has recently shown up. its cold here in Iowa, I first noticed this leaving work 2 days ago. As I pulled out of our lot under normal acceleration first gear (of course already in) no issue second gear didn't seem to rev between gears but did shift hard then almost felt like it didn't engage fully then re-shifted and was fine after that I also had the same issue halfway to work yesterday and hasnt done it yet today. Any ideas? Also I should mention my dad had the transmission serviced pan down and cleaned but he does not recall everything that had been done he thinks it was about 50,000 miles ago car also has 194,458 original miles on it.
Suggest servicing the trans with a new Filtran filter and Lifeguard 5 fluid, see how she behaves. Probably add a tube of Shudder Fixx while you're at it.
Congrats on the new ride!
Thank you for the advice I will do this here soon. I appreciate the help. however could it be my torque converter as I now have a whining sound when I start her up. I cannot hear it from inside the car but when I get out I can hear it.
Does the sound go away after the car warms up? If so, you're low on transmission fluid. Otherwise, the shop didn't use a Filtran filter and it's collapsing under the pressure.

Hey just wanted to thank all of you as of Friday of last week I had my precious car back in my hands. My dad had taken the 740il to have the trans gone through replaced fluid at 150,000(ish) miles car now has 197,492 miles turns out we are very very lucky as the transmission had two quarts too low. I am thanking god that the trans is still in perfect working order and car did not throw any codes! We now go to a master bmw mechanic that my dad used to do buisness with in Sioux Falls SD. The only reason he went to the other mechanic was because I worked there and we became pretty close to the owner. After a while of having dieters German auto garage it got way too expensive, I am not over exaggerating that. Dieter was an honest fellow but was in love with keeping thing too long and charging the ever living crap out of his customers( hence why I left). Anyways just thought I’d let you all in on what was wrong. Also dieters son was the one who worked on it which kind of explains a lot as his son was a major alcoholic. Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas to you all!
