My 96 740il with 165k miles has gas vapor coming from drivers side seam. No fuel on garage floor - yet. I’m going to install a new after market tank either the part number 16111182044. The tank will cost $360 and the labor to install it another $200-300. In the mean time, keeping the gas level below the seam is managing the problem.
While we are in there replacing the tank, is there anything else we should consider doing? An other tips or suggestions would be most welcome.
Merry and Happy
Hello,
My local indy shop sent my leaking tank out for repair, it was maybe $200 done in 24 hours not including labor cost to remove / install the tank. They used a local gas tank re-lining service. My tank was leaking from near the top, no puddles but lots of gas fumes you could smell. This was done 7 years ago and all is good so far.
Interesting. Thanks. I’m gonna just replace it. I have been advised to do that. But glad yours worked out so well. I found a new, non bmw tank for $360. Labor will be $200. Not to bad. Anything else to replace while we’re in there?
Your car has SLS? Just making sure as that part number is for SLS.
No SLS on my rig. So the part #16111181867 is the part I need based upon vin from bmw. That’s the 22 gallon / 85 liter tank. My mechanic says 2-3 hour job.
