Most of the calves were pretty clean, but some carbon build up on a few. Recommendations for cleaning up with heads still on?

I need to take better pics of the cams as this angle is bad. But heads look pretty clean. Cams look good. No visible scoring or unusual wear. The oil spray bar on these heads is certainly way better than the M70!

Did some additional research on the exhaust down pipes for the M73. It does NOT look as though the later E31 M73 downpipes will match up to the ‘91 stock exhaust. So, will still need to address that piece.

Under the valve covers looks nice and clean! The oily grime in the intakes seems pretty normal in my limited experience (2 x M70's).

It happens... When pcv valves go bad oil gets sucked into the intakes

Since I’m going to swap the whole M73, I will just replace the 2 PCV valves. Will be good PM any way.

Finally made some progress. Had to buy a whole new engine hoist. But got it together and got her mounted on the engine stand.

It’s been slow going as I started a new job, Holidays... blah blah blah.

I’ve tried to find the CRC gasket cleaner a couple of places including my local O’Reillys with no luck. I’ll just have to order online.

Any value to painting the exhaust manifolds with ceramic exhaust paint?

You will use M70 valve cover gaskets so just replace M70 pcv valves under the throttles.
Amazon has the crc gasket remover with prime.
No do not paint the manifolds, they flake, stink and peal.

Perfect. The PCV valves on my M70 powder coated VCs have less than 500 miles on them!

Yup, already have some in my amazon cart.

I'm not sure there is any "value," but it certainly looks nicer. Dragon's point is a good one, though -- use quality material that isn't just going to burn off. If memory serves, I painted mine in high-temperature silver ceramic on the twin-turbo engine. (I know I did the intakes, valve covers, etc., and in my mind I think I did the exhaust as well.) I'll check next time I find myself out in that shop.

    I'm enjoying following this thread!

    Cheers, John

Looks great! Extra props for doing it in that weather -- that's wanting it bad. My blood has thinned back out since my days where it snows.

I also like the organic jackstand supporting the car behind you. No Prop 65 warning necessary.

    Cheers, John

Finally back from a rash of travel the last month and looking to make some progress this weekend too.

@dragon - have you sealed up the secondary air pump bungs on the exhaust manifold yet? Did you pull the exhaust manifolds and replace the gaskets or just leave them in place?

Yes those are welded up. Just left the manifold in place, they are not know to ever leak.

Upper and lower oil pans have been swapped in along with the m70 oil pump, and engine mount brackets swapped, engine re timed. Decided to have some engine parts painted. Its coming along.

Engine is almost ready, just missing a few seals and still need to powder coat intakes and valve covers. M73 wp has to be retained. Also the 2 rear m70 manifolds bolt right up to m73 block, the front ones down pipe has to be modded.

Front m70 manifolds do not bolt on to the m73 heads. The rear manifolds are plug and play. Front M73 flanges cut and welded onto the m70 manifolds. Exhaust system finished.
Also got a set on new engine mounts, old ones were compressed and tired.
