    Mass Air Flow Sensor questions

    Could use some advice...

Got both SES 171/174 error codes on a 2005 330i.

    Cleaned MAF and checked hoses.

Is there a way to bench test a MAF sensor? I saw a test where you disconnect the MAF and it there is no change in the way the engine is running it is bad. Also read about a voltage and a atmospheric pressure test.

Also, where's a good place to get a new MAF at a reasonable price?

Seems like prices are all over the place for a new replacement.

    Thanks in advance!!!

FCP Euro provides a LIFETIME warranty for any part they sell. An OEM MAF is not cheap ($225 for VDO/Seimens or $300 for one with a BMW logo). FWIW - I've had a cheap EBay MAF in my car for almost 2000 miles with no issues.

Before you start throwing parts at your car for what is the most common codes a M54Bxx will throw, have the car smoke tested for vacuum leaks. A 'soft failing' Fuel Pump can cause those codes too. I battled these very codes for a while myself but since I installed a new Fuel Pump and replaced the DISA (which failed a vacuum test), I've not seen them again.

failed MAF's are extremely rare unless you've been running an oiled air filter.

Its almost always vacuum leaks, have it smoke tested.

    ^ this and
Get MAF cleaner. Don't use brakekleen or anything else on it and don't touch the wire with your hands.
