Have you pulled any codes? Does the sound continue when you rev the engine? I would pull the oil pan and look for pieces of the plastic guides.

Yes, sounds like it. Don't drive it, every click sends more aluminum shavings into the oil, the life blood.

With that much noise coming from an M62TU, I'd agree that it's going to be time to open up the front of the engine, and do timing chain guide rails, tensioners, timing chains, crankcase vent apparatus, and probably much of the cooling stuff while you're at it.

The sound was there on the evening of 12/1/2017, but I started the car on 12/3/2017, then 12/4/2017, and that sound completely disappeared. What could be the cause of this noise coming on suddenly and then not being there at all?

Could have been a stuck timing tensioner? Cheap part, easy fix, and if it's going it could have been the problem! Look up timing tensioner

Changed the tensioner June 2016. I am confused as to why my car would make that sound then stop all of a sudden. Odd behavior.

Pulled the pan, there wasn't any pieces of the guides in the pan. Oil had some "froth" in it.

Its not uncommon to have some tiny air bubbles in th pan as the last of the oil drips down for a bit, but thats all. Describe said "froth" some more. Was it at all white or gray in color?

I'm going to get the car back tomorrow and talk more with my mechanic and see what he says.

Froth in the oil can lead to air being pushed into the lifters, but this definitely doesn't sounds like that. If there are no pieces of plastic in the pan, im thinking the tensioner is failing erratically. Maybe the froth has something to do with that as well?
Simple start, check the oil level too.

Also you can use a screwdriver and put your ear to the end of it. Place the screwdriver on the valve covers over the chain and then on other parts, see if you can pinpoint where the sound is strongest.

Odd sound for sure. Ive had TCG failure on 2 of these and more clacking was heard. The last time, I was sure it was guides - turned out to be bearing failure on the alternator, of course I found out after buying the parts, so I did guides anyway. Lesson - check anything that spins. Pull the belts off and see what it sounds like when you crank it.

^this is a great point. Water pumps are also on my list of things that rattle and make noise when they are close to giving up.
