I am just wondering what size is the definite maximum depth, top and bottom mount, for the from speakers. I have some now rare speakers from my E39 that I love dearly and want to put in the E92. Unfortunately, Boston Acoustics no longer produce car audio. I still have my Pro50 SE speakers and wonder if they will fit. Not much on the market today outside of Focal, Dynaudio and Morel come close to the sound these produce. I'd hate to part with them. I have the factory HiFi system, two midrange and two tweeters front and back and analog amp. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the Crutchfield site; they have a great configurator where you'd enter your specific make/model/year and the populated results are only those that will fit your model. It should have the sizes listed as well - link below.

I just checked Crutchfield and when putting in my vehicle info, it shows no speakers available at all. This can't be correct. Surely there are some specifications on what speakers my car can accommodate. Has no one changed their speakers? I found the BSW upgrade yesterday but there are no specs or speaker sizes given except for the fact that they are 100mm, which equates to roughly 4". Has anyone upgraded to the Focal IFBMW-S plug and play system? Does it work in the coupe? Crutchfield has it but is says its not compatible with my car. Is there a difference between the clearance of the coupe and sedan?

Still no one? Wow. I guess I expected a lot coming from the E39 forum. No one here is even a little concerned about the sound of their music? No audiophiles?

You have MAYBE 40mm of depth before you need to use custom mounts and extensive modification. The stock speakers are really shallow.
I'm pretty new to my e92 too, I'm definitely interested in some sound upgrades.
Thanks for the feedback. That gives me a direction to go in...maybe. It looks like the Focal K2 Power ES 100 K are 39mm top mount depth. I would probably have to remove the factory grill and somehow fab up a mounting ring for them to work. Either way, I know my Bostons wont fit without a totally modified door card. Its just tough to want to spend $750 when my Bostons are in perfect shape. The BSW are cheaper but I have no way to audition them.

I remember how bad the sound was in my e39, what made the biggest difference in yours? Is a speaker upgrade enough, or do you really needs amps and head unit too?
In my E39 I originally just upgraded the speakers to a set of Boston FX5 coaxial drop ins. The problem then was, I had no real mid bass. 5 1/4 speakers just can't usually deliver in that frequency range, especially non components. I knew if I wanted to really hit the sub 60hz range, I would have to add a dedicated subwoofer with an amp. The other issue was the coaxial speakers lowered my sound stage and shot at my knees. There was no clarity of the highs. I knew I then had to raise the sound stage to my ear level, so I went for some components. Without an amp you aren't doing your component speakers justice. Even the coax speakers sounded clearer and livelier with an amp. It just wakes your speakers up. My Pro50s could handle 125w RMS and NEEDED at least 100 to be pushed enough to sound good. Even aftermaket head units cant deliver that without an amp. The head unit is more a piece that some say you need only if you want to really dial in your sound. I do like to dial in my low pass and high pass slopes. I f you like to use an equalizer then a head unit makes on the fly changes easier. What I do is get my gain and low pass and high pass set on my amps and my crossover (0dB, -2dB or -4dB attenuation levels for the high) while the system is EQ neutral or flat. Once I get it to sound good almost great, Im done with the amps. Then the head unit allows for further fine tuning (low pass and high pass slopes, sub 40hz boost level, time alignment, etc) that I can do for each genre at my behest. Then the system starts to take shape and sound really good. In short, buying an amp and head unit depends on what your individual needs and wants are. If you just want better than stock sound and thats it at bare minimum, drop in speakers are fine. If you want a system that makes your artist sound like they are sitting in your lap, you need the amps and head unit IMHO. I also have a ton of music in lossless format that I have on a thumb drive that I like having USB access to.
