I have a 2000 bmw 528i (183xxx) i bought it a couple years ago with a bad head gasket and long story short built a new engine all the way down to the piston rings. Okay, so ive put about 1875miles on my new engine and I got 4 check engine lights that popped up today. I have p0144 evaporative emissions system incorrect flow, p1250 manifold absolute pressure to high, p0325 knock sensor 1 circuit (bank 1), and p1250 again. The car idles rough at cold start and has no power when I hit the gas. also the emissions reader shows the catalayic converter is failing the system test. Also when I accelerate hard (before check engine light) i would get a gas smell in the cabin but i cannot find any leaks around the fuel injectors or fuel lines. please help! (full gas tank, never run it lower than a quarter)

Yeah, um, you need a better diagnostic tool.
This car does not have a manifold absolute pressure sensor, so that code is nonsense.
Maybe your secondary air pump is bad, maybe a rubber hose is defunct, maybe the vacuum hose is broken or disconnected.
And maybe the knock sensor harness has been damaged. or not?
You need something that reads BMW codes, not p-codes. ECS Tuning sells a Foxwell scan tool with very good capabilities.

okay thank you ill pull the two number bmw codes tomorrow and post the bmw specific codes. i have the reader somewhere i just have to find it.
The bmw codes are 15 38 12 90 7a 39
Bmw codes come in words if I'm not mistaken.
C217 S63 AMG S Cabriolet ( Daily )
E87 116i with mild cams, headers, cold air intake making 136 bhp Lol (My Learning Track Car)
E36 328i Sport ( Project in making and future race/track car )
Yup. Words. I have half a dozen diagnostic scan tools available to me....every one of them uses actual words. If your scan tool gives you just numbers, it is garbage.

I guess that would be why i cant find what they mean anywhere... okay ill have to try to get ahold of a better one. its a peake scanner that came with my car when i got it.
Peake has a booklet to translate the codes. It’s available via a google search. It’ll be better than nothing.

ECS Tuning sells a Foxwell scan tool (under the "Schwaben" name), which by all reports I've heard does an excellent job of two-way communication with all BMW computer modules.
Since your car is a 2000 model year, you will also almost certainly want the 20-pin adapter to connect to the BMW underhood diagnostic port. If you have this big round connector underhood, this is the only place you'll be able to connect to the ABS, body module, and a great number of the other computers in your car.
Hurry; it's on sale!

Make absolutely sure to find the 20-pin converter cable, about $15 right now

according to the peake reader
code 12
camshaft position sensor exhaust.
code 38
ignition feedback- shunt resistor
code 39
knock sensor cyl# 1-3
code 90
Evap large leak detected
code 7a
oil temperature sensor
code 15 was a reference to which manual page to turn to for accurate coding.
So far I have tested the secondary air pump and no air passes through when I removed off the car 68ºf here; and no air passed through after I put it in the freezer for 20 minutes.
also I found a small crack in the valve cover gasket around one of the bolt holes on one side but not the other of the same bolt hole. Also the ccv hose that goes into the valve cover the head of the hose pops off. (where it clips to the valve cover, not sure what the proper name for that is.)
None of the knock sensor wire appears to be damaged it all looks new and untouched even the plastic cover around the wire.

below is a picture of the break in the valve cover gasket and a break in the valve cover I also just discovered as well. Are these bad enough to cause issue? I will be replacing them anyways im just curious if these could be contributing to my issues
foxwell scanner reads:
DME: fuel system, major leak detected, possibly fuel cap. (obd2 p0445)
DME:signal, oil temp sensor (obd2 p1161)
DME:signal, exhaust camshaft sensor (obd2 p1397)
DME: signal, knock sensor 1 (obd2 p0325)
The only question I really have is can the knock sensor retarding the timing cause the exhaust camshaft code? The camshaft sensor on the exhaust side is brand new but came from autozone so I know its possible for the bmw to reject it because its not bmw brand. the rest of the issues I should be able to track down myself.

No, the knock sensor can't cause the cam sensor code.
