I figured the gunk would block the oil from returning back to the oil pan, and generally prevent proper lubrication of all the parts. I really debated leaving it alone or taking it out. I was trying to think of what my Dad would have told me to do. Probably leave it alone. But I couldn't bear to look at it so I cleaned it up. I think the engine is quieter now than before though. Time will tell.
I know, I know . And considering the noises the black car is making now, I think it's probably imminent that I will transfer the tags and drive this one. Will wait until no danger of snow though, it's too nice to drive in the snow and salt. If I was a bit older (and richer) and had a second home in Florida I would leave this one down there.
I will say this one is much cushier than the sport. Not sure if that's the way it's supposed to be or if it needs new shocks/struts. If I keep it I think some lowering springs and Bilsteins might firm up the ride and give it a nice stance.
Transferred the plate from the black car to Green and been driving her around. Getting an occasional P1423 code. Think I may have gotten some grease in the secondary air line when I was reinstalling it. Need to pull it back out and clean it up again. Engine was very dirty before. Not anymore! Oil is staying pretty clean too given the scrubbing I gave the inside of the engine. She's really quiet running. A/C compressor is making noise like a bad PS pump, groaning away, and noticed that the tie rod end on the passenger side, and probably the whole center link, need to be replaced. Yeah, I could probably refresh the entire suspension! OMG these cars are like rabbit holes.
I replaced the windshield washer motor yesterday, my good deed for the day.
Some pictures since the sun looked right on the short ride home from work yesterday.
Some scratches on the rear bumper.
Really is a lovely car.
Nice and clean under the hood and no more oil smell.

That is one pretty e38...

Yes!
Love the green. Live the m-pars. The plates really make it too.
I hope you keep it.

Thanks Purp! She really is a looker.
Thank you! The green fits right in here in VT that's for sure. It almost looks black in certain light. I never thought I'd like the green but it does grow on you. I'll be keeping her for the meantime anyway. I'd sure hate to drive the car in the winter up here though.

Is that factory ride height on the suspension of that 7? I only ask because I wanted to pick up a set of M Pars but I was afraid it was going to look silly without an M Sport Suspension or lowered springs/shocks for my iL.
Our roads up here are terrible too. Ride is pretty decent with the mpars since the standard suspension is pretty cushy, way cushier than my sport package car.
Took it for a ride today. Got flashing CEL, car running really rough. Only code is pending P0308. Car is losing its charm quickly.
If it's just on one cylinder, likely a bad coil or spark plug.
What a beautiful car, sorry about the misfire, hopefully not a major issue. I'm surprised though that it made the SES light flashing. Surely no other errors? My engine had zillions of errors and only Error 21 or 22 for Camshaft sensor made the SES light to come on. It never came on when misfired.

Yeah that one is indicating a misfire on cyl #8. Clear it and see if it persists or returns (clearing it should get it running smooth again until the problem returns). But if you're not getting misfires moving around the cylinders, it is easier to isolate the problem.
I did clear it but still running rough. I better check the injector connection on #8.
Injectors connections all seem good. Code is actually P0306 not P0308. Erase the codes, car still runs rough. Swapped in another coil, no change. Swap in a new plug, no change. Unplug coil leads to 5, 7, and 8 cylinders, you can hear the idle change. Unplug 6, no change in idle. Problem definitely with #6.
You can drive it for a while running really rough and CEL won’t come on for a while.
Oh and I guess the early results in my kerosene enema for the OSV were’t the final answer either, car has started smoking on startup again after the long drive this AM. I feel good about that being clean but since it was so gooky I think the CCV is plugged anyway so I’ll swap that out too.
Damn.
So my son hooked me up with a laptop with a bunch of BMW tools software loaded onto it. I can't figure out how to connect to modules, I get error messages like "IFH-0009: No response from control unit" and "Language variants do not match. Malfunction possible!". BUT, it does connect and I was able to check out this smoothness (yeah roughness on my car currently) page. Seems I have some issues beyond just cylinder 6. Hoping that changing the CCV might help me out here.
Of course this is telling me it’s cylinder 2 not firing?

Language variants do not match: this is normal, you can ignore it
IFH-0009: No response from control unit; which port are you using? ODB in cabin or 20 pin (round) in engine bay? The ODB only has access to transmission and engine, so it's normal getting this message there for other modules.
What are the error codes in INPA? Since you can get the smoothness report, you should be able to read the error codes as well. It's on the previous screen I think. I honestly cant believe that you only have a misfire and the SES light is flashing, there has to be some other errors there.
I was using the OBD port in the car. Guess I would need that obd to round adapter. I get the same message when I try connect to the wife's X3 too.
I was getting two errors in memory. 62 and I believe it was 54 (took a pick but stupidly cut off the first digit).
"62 Aussetzererkennung, summenfehler"
"54 Aussetzererkennung, Zyl 6"

Uhm. I do not know about the rest but 'motortemperatur: -48 C' makes me think there's something disconnected or inop.
Hmmm. Thanks boys I will check some things out. I know she was running perfectly for a few days until this shenanigans started. Will check some things out before skiing tomorrow.
I think the sensor is on the waterpump (#9): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_7489
Is there a separate one for the temp gauge than for what you see in inpa? Because the gauge goes to midpoint and stays there once the car is warmed up.
