IMO the M-Pars look "standard" to someone who only has a passing interest in these cars. The 16s look pretty undersized by today's standards, and even though it's a 7-Series they make the car look like it wasn't spec'd properly or has been downgraded. This is all in reference to how it will appear when for sale.
Agreed!
I think it'll look good with a detailing and decent photographs. Lots of work still to do so I think it will be spring before I have it ready. I need to register it and drive it around to be able to sell it and I am not driving it in the salt and snow.
Whyyyyy do you need to register it to sell it? Some sort of weird VT law?
Gotcha. Makes total sense for the driving purpose.
Watch out these ILs are very addictive! The more miles you drive them, the more miles you want to drive. Soon you will be looking for some to ride in the backseat just so you can hear them keep saying "holy crap".
Nice ride and sweet deal on the wheels!

Ha, yeah I wish I had purchased one of these years ago when the kids were little. Now they are gone so all I need is two seats.
Psyched about the wheel deal! About the same price as buying four 16" tires for the basketweaves. Someone can use the weaves for winter wheels although it would be a shame to drive this car in the winter it's so nice.
Last weekend was reserved for changing the blower motor out. I tried troubleshooting the issue by checking the voltage at the relay, but for some reason the relay always had a signal for the motor to run, but the motor was having none of it. Not sure if it was a bad motor or a bad FSU, but no matter, I replaced both and tested before putting all back together. Dash looks scary all apart, but as difficult as this job SEEMS, it's really not hard, just time consuming if you have not done it before. I was super careful messing around with the vent flap levers that need to be removed. I was nervous about breaking stuff.
Car is all back together and cleaned up waiting for a detail. Yesterday I took closer look at the valve cover gaskets, and they really don't seem bad, still very soft and no oil in the plug wells. I think the leaking issue is all power steering fluid. Need to crawl under there while it's running and someone turning the wheels to see where it's coming from.

Have you had a chance to do any decent drive / park cycles to see if that start-up oil-smoke problem was taken care of? Next oil change I am dropping pan to check the things. Will consider the kerosene enema dependingon what I see/feel. Ive got start-up smoke when its below freezing, sometimes. It comes and goes.
No not yet other than around the driveway and once around the block. Let it idle to warm up once. Will need to drive it around once the weather clears. It's actually perfect out there today.
Have you replaced the CCV on the back of the intake? That could cause intermittent smoking too. On this car I was in the process of replacing the CCV when I realized that it looked like it had been replaced recently, presumably to fix this smoking issue.
Per the other thread, are you still trying to sell this?
Well, maybe I can just flip mine and buy this one. If the Range Rover were actually running at the moment, I could just look to sell the 740i now and drive that. But Nooooooo, that would be too easy. . When you planning on wrapping this baby up? I think I need an iL..........

I’d like to wrap it up soon. Finding the time to work on it has proven to be a challenge. Hopefully carve some time out this weekend. I will keep you posted!
Actually found some time to work on this car this past weekend. I have had it torn apart for weeks. Now it's back together and driving again. I changed the upper timing and valve cover seals, along with the tensioner, bunch of o-rings here and there, and all the power steering hoses. This seems to have stopped MOST of the leaking, but looks like the trans cooler lines are leaking too. Damn, those are expensive, I need to look into another solution.
Started by washing the engine because it was filthy.
Was dirty inside too. BMW makes it so easy to change the oil, why recommend 15k mile oil change intervals? Stupid.
After:
Cleaned up a bunch in the timing covers too. Will need a quick turn around on the first oil change. Also changed the o-rings in the oil lines to the filter. Those looked super leaky, and it was fairly easy with the timing covers off. Still a challenge to get them re-inserted. A rubber band helped make that easy.
All back together. Should have sent the valve covers out for power coating. A total pain to paint and they turned out so-so. Oh well.
Hopefully tonight do something mild on the car. I have a line on a potential buyer but I will never make any money if you figure in the labor.

Where are the trans cooler lines leaking from? The connectors?

It looked like it was from where the metal connector and the rubber hose join. But looking at it today I wonder (hope) if it’s just residual oil. There’s pools of it in the recesses of the engine mount bracket. I need to give it a more thorough degreasing underneath and check it again.
Whoa, what did you do to clean the heads like that? Weren't you worried about gumming things up below?

Not worried at all Jamos. I meticulously scraped it all out and wiped it with rags. Used a brush with kerosene in trouble spots. Kerosene melts it like buttah. I spent a lot of time on it. Strange thing is this engine was gunky but quiet and smooth. My black car was spotlessly clean inside and the engine is rapping and tapping its last gasps of life. Granted it’s 94k vs 213k but still.
Gunky would only help keep it quiet though imo.

You should keep this car since your 740i is on its last legs... wouldn't be a bad car to live with after you've done this much work... just sayin...
