$350 for the battery and now its no longer plug and play but needs to be mapped to the car!?
anyone else have a work around?
I have a 09 z4 (E89) and i received a quote of ~350 for a new battery( BMW dealer). they also said it had to be paired to the car... what ever that means
The battery doesn't need to be purchased from the dealer...just shop local automotive places/departments for a 49/H8 class size AGM battery. It will have the specs you need. If the X6 is like the X5...you can also look at the 95R/H9 battery, too...that one can be found with 105 AH specs...again, usually less expensive than the BMW branded battery. But I don't know that much about the X6's battery compartment...if it's smaller than the X5...you'll need to stay with the 49/H8 (see chart below for battery width/length for the AGM 49/H8 & 95R/H9..as well as the CCA/RC/AH/CA ratings:
The battery will need to be registered though...because you have an IBS (intelligent battery sensor). See info below which should help bring you up to speed about this sensor, its technology, and how it works. If you do a google search for "Carly for BMW" or search the hundreds of threads here and other BMW forums for Carly...you can see how simple it is to buy your own diagnostic tool to do a simple battery registration.
The East Penn battery MFG chart below shows examples of what the common specs of the various battery class sizes are. Other battery manufacturers class sizes will have very similar specs...they may very by only a few points...but they all are pretty similar in specs.
{Example of East Penn 49/H8 AGM battery sold @ Sam's Club under the "Duracell" brand name...pics taken in 2014 so price may vary}

As usual great info from Q
I guess what has me hesitate is that the car starts fine and all electronics work as they should, seems like the only issues are that after a while with the engine off but the radio on the car shuts down and sometimes the convenience door handle unlock won't work and I will need to press the key fob button.
I guess best to have the battery tested but doesn't seem to be too bad
Have you unlocked your instrument cluster? If so, you can use the simple cluster TEST 9 to check your battery's voltage (due it prior to starting a cold engine or approx 2 hours after shut down...so that any surface charge from the engine won't skew your results.

The battery is registered to the car and some of the bigger bmw's are being up graded to 105ah agm's
i havent unlocked it, i used to do that on my e38 but i have since forgotten how. i'll look up the procedure and report back. ty!
got a new battery for ~$500 installed - what a freaking rip off. ~$300 for the battery (probably over paid by $100) but i needed it and they charged 1 hour of labor to install which is also a joke bc the "mapping" to the car took 30 minutes.
so i convinced them to do a total software update since the car had its original 2012 software. well this took 5 hours!!!. hopefully bmw's new software will help with some of the lag issues from a stop that people have complained about - will keep the 3 active members on these boards posted ;-)
It took them about 5 hrs to update our 2012 X6 as well. You'll notice an improvement in the throttle lag, but in no way is it perfect.

Yea it's a bit better, but definitely noticeable - still peeved about how much the battery and install was but the upgrading the software for free made up for it a bit
I'm curious; If you were to jumper a temporary 12V battery to the terminals while swapping batteries, would that trick the system into not realizing the battery had been replaced? I know that I'm surely over-simplifying, and this thread sure has clarified that why's and hows, but I was just wondering if my work-around would even work.

im not sure i understand peter. the reason they map the new battery to the car is, as i understand it, to let the car know that the new battery wont need as much charge as the old one. so it keeps the car from "frying' the new battery and supposedly makes the car more efficient as it dedicates less alternator power to charging the battery.
Wouldn't the sensors on the IBS let the car know what's what? I mean, it makes no freakin' sense. If you were to maintain 12v on the car while replacing the battery, the car "shouldn't" (in my simple mind) realize anything has changed. Just that the (new) battery isn't maxed out.

I paid 250 installed at a firestone in Maxwell Alabama for my e70 35d
