Aux water pump failed big time

After working on my 94 840 for the last few months, I was ready to drive it.

Yesterday I took the car out for my first 15 mile ride. Outside of a drivers side suspension clunk, soft brakes and pop up lights which refuse to cycle even after a new relay, most of the issues have been sorted and it ran very well. Came home and was quite pleased. So, i decided to get coffee and on the way back the aux water pump split (looking exactly like the photo on Timm’s site) and dumped all the coolant. By the time i rolled into my driveway, cars in the red.

Today i pulled the plugs and hoped. Nothing doing. Compression front to back: drivers side = 100, 90, 100, 115; passenger side = 130, 125, 140, 160, Bypassed the pump and refilled. Although the car idled fine cold point, white smoke and the sounds of a miss at idle as it warmed up.

I’m committed to finishing the car. It’s all part of the journey (so I keep telling myself). The question is, replace the head gasket or the entire motor? Can the heads be done with the block in the car?

Although mine looked fine, check those pumps. Mine got me and good!

The OBC said Check Coolant Temp and I looked and it was in the red. Not sure how long it was in the red but the coffee place is only a mile and half from the house. Regardless, here I am.

It is very easy to miss the gauge moving into the red - when my aux pump failed i was very lucky to get into traffic - and then the steam could be seen coming out of the bonnet, otherwise I'm quite sure I would have missed it.

As the engine was still running when you stopped there is a good chance that only the gaskets have failed - rather than the bores suffering scoring which would require a new engine as the cylinders cannot be re-bored. Since the engine managed to idle I would guess that the bores are OK.

The heads can come off with the engine in place.......

Usually when you overheat one of these all-aluminum engines, the cylinder bores tend to become egg-shaped, which leaves you with basically one option:

That only looks nice because it's a vee-twelve. The eight... nothing special about that to turn into an ornament!
