So my E38 has a couple of issues, most of which I've been able to figure out, except for the transmission. Symptoms, whine at high engine rpms in first, torque converter only locks when cold along with a control circuit code, when I go into the manual mode going down a hill and I try to get first, it goes into failsafe and then I get a code for first gear ratio incorrect. I was thinking about completely rebuilding the transmission and making sure the valve body has an updated check valve along with rebuilding it, also going to replace the torque converter and rear main seal as a "while I'm in there" thing. Any insight on all the issues before I go burning money?
Whining when cold, or in first can be a collapsed filter. I replaced mine with the correct filtran one and the whining went away. I put redline fluid in that I got from ECS and a tube of dr tranny shutter fix just to help the 280,000km torque converter. No noise after that and it performed great!

Genuine Filtran filter replacement with fresh oil didn't help my whining at all. Could my torque converter be bad?
I'll certainly try that along with some new fluid, but my question is, why would the whining be ONLY in first, doesn't do it in any other gear regardless of engine speed.
