Looking to install a steering wheel and airbag from a 1995 e34 into a 1994 e34. When I removed the old wheel, I discovered that there is a significant difference between the slip rings. The old one has a carbon contact that maintains contact with the slip ring whereas the new one does not. Is it as simple as changing the slip ring or is there more involved?
did you have an airbag on the old wheel?
if not then you will need a slip ring for the new wheel, also you will need to remove the carbon contact and rewire the horn with a new connector for the slip ring connector. if you didn't have an airbag then the wiring for the air bag plus all the control boxes are probably not fitted in your car (but 94 models all came with airbags.) unless somewhere along the line someone removed the airbag and fitted a wheel with no airbag then you would probably have the connector on the column. (it's orange color).
E34 525i Touring 1995, M52B28 LSD... fully restored.
Realoem.com can help with the part differences. You may need the bracket that the mating contact is installed.

The car currently has an airbag. It is the older style one with the solid black bmw emblem on it. Additionally, the slip ring does not have the wire that goes to the new style airbag.
