    LSD Options

I'd like to put one in my 540i, and I know I can get one from a M5, but I'd need the M5 half shafts and modified half shaft. Are there any pumpkin kits available for a rebuild or did any e39 non M5's come with an LSD that I can search for?

I’m also looking for an easy solution for this, but I don’t think it exists

Wavetrac, Quaife and one knock off brand, offer torsen diffs that bolt into the stock housing. Not super cheap though. I have the wavetrac and love it. No issues.

If you have an M Sport with the 3.15, the existing half shafts will bolt onto the M5 diff. You will need the rear section of an M5 driveshaft to attach to the front section of your existing one (if you're going to keep the auto).

I have an M Sport manual with the 3.15. Will the m5 diff just bolt on?

The nose of the M5 diff is longer, so you'd just swap the prop shaft complete for expediency and ease, the rest should just bolt up.
The rear section of the prop shaft is shorter in the M5.

Looks like this is a good option: http://metricmechanic.com/differentials/

If I read right, it’s $1500 for a fully built diff that will just bolt up.

My install of Wavetrac unit to show what's involved. Not too hard of a job.

Im not sure that's correct? I thought that was only if its' the TOURING with the 3.15, and not the Sedans? Correct me if I'm wrong. The driveshaft bit is exactly right.

The other supplier philly alludes to I think is Mfactory. AFAICT those seem to be Chinese built knock offs of WT/Quaife/etc. type diffs, although some BMW guys are running them, haven't heard that they are disasters...

Ha ha that would be sweet. Don't think so. See the note at the bottom:

Owner must provide their own Quaife Unit & Core
Please call for gear options & more information.

$1500 for them to install your quaife, in your diff. $2100 if you just drive your car in with a quaife in the trunk.

I believe you're correct. I did not elaborate since it appears the OP has a touring.

I have been torturing my M5 diff (with Redline Racing Oils "NS" style lube in it), and it has been performing perfectly. Just throwing that out there as a data point. It really is surprising me how well it's working.

The helical gear diffs are a little bit different of a concept, and when they are good quality ones they work very nicely, but a little different in operation than a standard style "salisbury style" or whatever they are. But I like a welded diff very well, so maybe I'm not a good guy to listen to.

Yep a thing to know is some of the Torsen style do NOT like having a wheel lift and be put back down again, i.e. lift a wheel on the track under heavy power and it will shatter the spider inside when it touches back down apparently... Now for a street car or even a mild "DE" car thats never gonna be a worry but for a super hi-po application, you might be better off w the clutch pack style. On the other hand, the "torque biasing" type are AMAZING in the wet/snow on real streets and that makes them a better choice IMO/IME for real daily type cars in mixed seasons. My Touring is amazing in the snow for a big old RWD german hoonwagon which by all rights should be a bit problematic.

I've got 2 spare M5 half shafts, PM me if there is any interest.

    Sold them back in 2018.
