I have a friend that recently purchased a two-year-old 428i on a dealership CPO. It's all nice and shiny but it scares the heck out of me because it is festooned with all these electrical, electronic and electromechanical gizmos that are just waiting to fail. Fail they will, and when they do, they are going to be hugely expen$ive to repair. The car will still be shiny but its value is going to drop like a rock. And his satisfaction with the car is going to drop just like its value. I don't think it's so much a question of domestic versus import or Caddy versus BMW any more. I prowl the salvage yards regularly, harvesting bits and pieces for our numerous BMWs, and I'm seeing a trend where cars are showing up in the yards with little to no damage to them whatsoever - people are selling them for scrap because they simply are too difficult and expensive to keep running right. I came across an '04 330i sedan a couple of weeks ago that had some slight damage to one rear door - that's it. I can't say it was in great shape but it was not a beater either - M-sport wheels, sport interior, not an entry-level car at all. I took a *lot* of pieces off of it to keep my car going, and my car paid me back by throwing a MIL code on the way home. I'm beginning to think the only way to go is to lease a new car every couple of years and kick it back at the end of the lease period before all those fancy features and systems start to fail.

Just have them drive the caddy back to back with a BMW on some curvy roads. If he doesn't notice the difference than he shouldn't buy the BMW :-)
