    2000 BMW Z3 2.8 DSC Error

I have been having an issue with my 2000 BMW Z3 for the last year and half (since I bought it). The traction control has never worked properly. When I first got it, the DSC light would come on as soon as the car was started. I replaced the DSC module since it appeared to not be communicating with the diagnostic software. It now can communicate with the software, but now the problem is different. The DSC will be on (light off) when I first start the car and go a few blocks, but eventually, when slowing down, the car will pulse the brakes, flash the DSC light, making a grinding sound briefly, then illuminate the DSC light. The car then drives normal after that. I checked the codes with DIS and got the following:

    A2 Rotation-rate signal
    67 Brake-light switch
    92 CAN bus fault

I have replaced the rotation rate sensor with a few used ones, but I am still getting these errors. I also replaced the brake light switch. How can I figure out if everything is talking right? Is the DSC controller messed up? Is there a bad connection? Is there a junction for the CAN bus that is corroded or intermittent? I've got the entire Z3 taken apart (I mean really apart, interior is out, bumpers are off, subframe removed, etc.), so I can get access to any wire I need to, but I'm not sure how to progress.

I have the same EXACT issue with my 2001 3.0. Mechanic says it might be the YAW SPEED SENSOR going bad. That part runs about $1,000 and is located under the driver's seat. I'd like some other opinions before I drop $1K on a part. Most of the advice I see in NOT to get a used one because once they are bad, they are bad and there's no way to test or repair it. I'd really like to see some feedback on this. Mines doesn't even pulse anymore. The DSC light and the brake light (in Amber) just comes on and stays on. I was wondering if a wheel speed sensor could cause this.

Yaw sensor = rotation rate sensor

But only go by confirmed codes. Do not change it on a whim. Used sensor from e46 is acceptable.

As far as the original poster... This is a more unusual case. Where did you get the replacement dsc module? Was it the correct kind for your car?

It is the exact same module that was in the car originally (ATE Mk20). It was a used unit from eBay. I am not against sending it to module masters to get rebuilt, but I want to make sure that is the right path. I don't think it is the yawn sensor since I also have the other errors.

You should consider testing the brake switch and checking over the wires to and from the yaw sensor and DSC module.

Had a similar problem several years ago. ABS would randomly kick in at a single wheel, and at highway speeds which could be quite unsettling.

After cleaning and swapping the wheel speed/rotation sensors and cracking open the DSC module to look for broken solder joints... I tested the yaw sensor.

Sitting still the live yaw sensor readings would show wild random readings. Bought a used one off of eBay for about $250 - problem solved. No issues since.

Just test the sensor readings first.

Did you use INPA to see the live readings? Or is this in GT1?

Not GT1. Pretty sure it was INPA.

Ordered a used YAW rate sensor from eBay ($85), installed it on Saturday...and fixed the seat bushings at the same time. PROBLEMS GONE!!

Glad it is solved! I have one sitting on my shelf, but my car is taken apart to a non-functional level to take care of a host of issues. I hope to resolve this as it all comes back together.
