Upgrade BMW Z4 shocks without sensor?

Hey guys, this is my first post.
    So i have a 2011 BMW Z4 sdrive 30i.
The shocks are giving out/horrible ride. The oem shocks are too expensive so I'm deciding to go aftermarket. But the mechanic told me aftermakets dont come with the sensor. Any idea how that would affect the car? Will a dash light pop up? What about when I put the car into sport mode?

Not sure what sensor he's referring to but will share an opinion; stick with oem or equivalents (ex., bilstein, koni). Find a way to bridge the gap between lesser quality parts and the stuff you really want. You'll forget the cheaper price soon enough and enjoy the performance and durability. I've always had good luck with bilstein. No direct experience with koni but people have good things to say about them.
