Wow, the undercarriage looks meticulous! I'm surprised it was driven that many miles with it still looking like that.

You don't know what was or wasn't done to the underside.

    - There's no such thing as an airbag light on this wheel - see picture of my car's wheel, as delivered from factory in March 1994.
It's correct, but I wasn't specific enough. Looks like BMW used the 255 code for various models throughout the year. On my old 328i's spec sheet, 255 refers to this wheel, which didn't exist in 1993.

I just grabbed my 1991 850 (no CSi) brochure and it pictures the wheel of the one fitted in the CSi of this topic. It does not have SRS Airbag written on it. The optional airbag wheel that is mentioned, is the ugly 4 spoke abomination used around that time.

The airbag version of this wheel, as I said, has the airbag light in the lower spoke. This is not something you just make up.

    Here you go:

Maybe it wasn't clear enough from my previous picture, so here's a better picture showing the Sports Leather Steering Wheel that was installed at production on my March 1994 850CSi.
As previously mentioned, a number of earlier RHD CSi's had the same option code, starting from mid-October 1993.
As you can see, this wheel definitely has the 'SRS Airbag' logo, and there is NO airbag light.
    Hope this clarifies the fact.

The wheel I got from overseas for my 8 series has the red airbag light... Would that be incorrect for a '94-95 840ci found in Europe back in the day? (if I'm trying to replicate a LHD 840ci Sport package car)

Then it would be interesting to know, does the airbag light in the wheel light up with ignition on?

It was a very early airbag sportswheel, maybe some old models didn't have an airbag light in the cluster and got the wheel with the light on it.

Guys, the airbag light on the wheel is for cars which were not originally fitted with airbags. The cars without the light came from the factory with airbags. Can't find the thread, but someone went through this when they retrofitted it.

I thought I recognised this car.

You would be be surprised at how far gone the underside of this car was!!!

There is a company in Holland called StiptPolishPoint that seem to be a one stop shop for restoring and high level detailing.

The blue Csi was given the full treatment prior to going on sale. Probably doubled the sale price.

    They do some amazing work.

i wonder how much was spent on the underside of that csi.

Interestingly they seem to show lots of lovely before and after shots but I wonder if they go through replacing every bush and suspension part as well ?

i have to say it looks an impressive set up.

I do do like a F1 style clean garage floor.

correct. Dutch YT channel Autoblog recently posted a vid of that chop, about a restored GT40. Every single nut and bolt was removed and renewed/refurbed. They say they don’t replace parts, which means sanding, grinding, repainting. Then I’d rather fit a new part.

First thx... will keep these guys in my address book !
Also shows it has been done to get it perfect and not because it needed major repairs.

They done a superb job !
BTW .... not cheap (just called them), underside ONLY (they completely take everything apart and restore it to new), 100-120 hours job.

The refurb has certainly had the desired effect of elevating this particular CSi's sale price.....I just hope the new owner doesn't suffer any recurring corrosion issues on the various under-body parts that might have been cosmetically treated, rather than being replaced.

Exactly. I don’t see the point, unless you want to cover the car and put it away for next 20 years.

Seems a very swish set up. The right balance between cosmetic restoration and replacing worn out parts.Surely if your going to that expense tired suspension parts and degrading rubber need to done at the same time.

The csi suspension is a pretty complex set up.

A way that some are doing this underneath the car as well as other areas (engine, wheel well, etc) is dry ice blasting. It is bigger in Europe than the US, but there are shops that do it. It is supposed to be much safer than pressure washing, and really cleans up areas. There is a shop here in Florida that does it.

these guys restore to factory, so everything is taken appart, cleaned and if needed replaced.
Yes expensive, but bring your car to the dealer and ask them to replace all bushings (suspension and frame)...... the bill will be higher !
Still a lot off money, but for the right car ......worth it.
