    catalytic converters

Is there a generally considered 'best choice' when it comes to cats? DEC for instance?

My LH cat has got to go. BMW's $1000+ price tag is, of course, high. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that has had good luck with their replacement cat(s).

    Thanks!

Went to a shop today that said they could replace the CAT for $355 (it's a 50-state car). When there, The Man smacked the RH CAT. It rattled. No sniff tests here.

I chose to cut 'em out. 3400+ rpm having been the trigger point for SES-ing into fuel-cut-out stumble, on the way home, multiple spins up to 5K+: No codes. No problems. No SES.

Noise? Barely more. Standing at the back with the car running, the front FAN makes more noise than the exhaust. IN the car, exhaust note can be heard..but it's only slightly more than with the CATs in.

LH CAT: Pieces of substrate on one end loose and rattling, the other end about 80% plugged up.

Note: This is an M62 car...NOT a TU.

I've had two of these sitting in boxes for 2 years. About to get them put in, I'll let you know when I do.

I've had those Magnaflows on my '96 for about 5 years with no issues. Amazon has them for less than $70 with free shipping last I checked.

I have good oem cats that I'd like to unload. They came off my 98. When theyre cut off it just produces a bad carbon monoxide stench and the throttle sounds a little more raspy... You can use the 90 degree angled spark plug anti foulers to rid of your CEL with the cats off...

Not carbon monoxide stench :P Just fuel. If you're smelling carbon monoxide, it's far too late hah.

You need to remove the mufflers if you remove the cats, otherwise the sound is horrible. If you remove the mufflers and not the cats, the sound is fine. IF you remove both, then the sound is epic AND with all the extra fuel in the tail pipe, you get lots of afterfire on a warm exhaust (those lovely poppity pop pop pop sounds when you let go of the accelerator at decent rpms)
