    Turbo seals

    2008 335i 89,000 miles.

How do I know if they're going bad? Had my VCG and oil pan gasket replaced yesterday under warranty. Noticed some whitish or grayish smoke like substance coming out of mufflers yesterday, but couldn't determine if it was smoke or condensation. After then warming the car up and driving it for about 20 minutes, the issue persisted. I still have 2.5 months of AutoNation warranty and they will fix it if it's bad. Just wondering if I'm just being paranoid or if there is an issue.

Does the exhaust smell sweet? Did you check the coolant level? I’d start there, and have the engine computer (DME) and the automatic tranny computer (EGS) scanned for codes. The SES light is on only when an emissions related code is present.

It does not smell sweet. Just smells like exhaust. Honestly I hope the seals are bad so that I can get it done before warranty runs out. I did notice that the front turbo is covered in dry oil, I'm assuming it came from the leaking valve cover gasket.

I'll probably take it in next week.

One of my coworkers with a 2007 335i had the same issue. He replaced the turbo's and the smoke stopped. But, it's not going to be an easy thing to prove to the warranty company.

Thanks. I bought it from BMW of Dallas. Which is operated by AutoNation. The warranty is through AutoNation as well. Hoping this simplifies things. I'd sleep a lot better knowing my turbos weren't going to go out in the next few months since I just bought it.
