    Cool

What 5 speed dups did you install Getrag 245 or 240 or something else ?

Thx Dups,Robert and Okie for the input, here is a link on checking start motors for fit, I add pinion gear travel from rest as well, so that it engages the flywheel properly at the correct distance of travel from rest position, if it does not shims or notching is done.

It seems to be a 245, but that's going by the fact that there's a number on the bottom and it ends with ...245. And it looks like a 245, I guess.

Oh, I didn't do it either (the 5-speed swap); I found it that way. PO had no idea and the Original Owner had all records from 1/1/77 to 2002 no mention of any major work in the book, just oil changes, and stuff. I tried to call him once, but he was like 90 yrs old and must have thought I was a salesman, rather than an e21 stalker. Definitely not, a legioneer. Hung up on me, he did.

Its a 245.. you read it off the back case cover, heres my spare Getrag 245, lower left back of the 3rd split case. This one is more complete( missing 2 bows-rubber stopper-back tail section, new seals, inc Speedo seals) than the ones on e-bait.

Shucks, I knew it. The replacement is 10 pounds heavier and the JB weld is still holding on the old one. Oh well. If you're doing racecar, you might want to splurge for a Bosch "premium remanufacture". It is much lighter.

The screws in back, do they to through the clover looking bracket behind the starter? As an extra holder-upper?

    Yes the upper-holder.

The smaller starters are usually what's called "permanent magnet" type.
