can you chip the 840 CI sport

    As the title says,
can you chip it to make it a little quicker? (I know it sounds stupid but I don't know much about it)

    Thanks

You've got a beautiful car. It does two things extremely well: look timeless, and eat highway miles. Crushing twisty roads and stoplight drag races are not part of the package. When I first got my 840 18 years ago, I was underwhelmed by its performance. I put in a chip. No meaningful improvement. I flogged it around a number of race tracks. Great fun, but it was never fast. I looked into making it faster, but concluded I really like it just as is. That said, there are a couple of really effective yet easy performance modifications. 3.64 diff was mentioned. It won't make the car faster, but it will get out of the hole faster, making it feel faster. Upsized sway bars will tighten the handling without the harshness of race shocks/springs. That's about it. Other mild modifications such as a strut brace or performance exhaust bring slight improvement at best. Then there are scam "improvements" like cold air intakes that are worse than stock. For a real leap in performance, you'll have to depart the "easy zone" and consider forced induction, which has been done successfully on many 8's.

The other area to consider is more of a restoration and slight tweaking of original performance. Specifically the suspension is full of wear items like bushings and shocks. Replace like for like and you might really appreciate what the 8 can do bone stock. Upgrade to monoballs for a slight improvement. Oh, and use decent tires.

One fun fact. Your car probably left the factory with over 300 HP. A bunch of 8-series nuts used to host dyno days and an M62 840 topped the charts with IIRC 312 HP. The M62's were way under rated.

    Brett,

Well said. Some tweaks to improve/update, but not try to change what it is. A Grand Tourer. I did the 3:64 LSD, heavier sway bars, strut brace, new bushings, 18 M Parallels, Michelin Pilot Sports on a 840Ci M62. It's a nice handling/riding GT that I really enjoy. I do also have a Porsche Cayman S which is what the 8 will never be, which is just fine.

A friend with a 94 840CI bought my 3.64 differential out of my 93 850CI, and has been grinning ever since. This will really make your car come alive! Mind you, the input flanges were different, and had to be swapped. Otherwise it was a bolt in. You will lose some top speed, but will get much better acceleration. The car should have come from the factory like this.

Yep! It’s the greatest improvement to create more quickness off the line.

There is a guy in the Seattle area who go's by DUDMD. He may have a chip for you. Very nice guy, knowledgeable, very easy to work with, and his chip has been in my car for over two years without a hiccup. First I did a Dinan engine and trans chip in my 94 with the M60 and I didn't notice much. Than I did a 3.15 LSD diff and it became more fun. Next, I removed the Dinan chip, put in the DUDMD chip for the manual trans I was planning to swap and I felt the car became a bit more aggressive the DUDMD chip versus the Dinan chip. He told me hold to modify the DME to make it all work for the manual trans swap. I drove it as an auto with his chip for about a month and I noticed the difference. Then I did the 6 speed swap, and with his manual chip installed all works very nicely. I would check with him to see if there is something for your M62. And he even takes phone calls too.

I didn't find it to be too bad. Took it apart on a Saturday morning, cleaned and painted parts Saturday afternoon, and put it back together Sunday morning.

+1 or get a 3.45 custom built for your car, better than any chip.

If you have access to INPA or DIS GT1, I can preprogram a replacement DME for you to match your VIN/Correct SW, and then install our tune on it.
When you receive it, just sync ews, and you can have 2 DMEs. One stock and one tuned with no downtime.
