    Gas issues

    Hello!
Suddenly, on my 2011 BMW 328i, I am getting a warning when starting up in the morning that says "close gas cap" when the gas cap is tight. This causes the "service engine soon" light to come on. Then, when filling up at the gas station, gas leaks out from under the car but stops leaking when I drive for about a mile- no gas leak at all after that. Any ideas? Thank you for any help!

There must be a leak in the evap system, there are parts of the system in the rear of the right rear fender behind the sender liner like the dmtl pump ect either you try to pin point the leak when you fill up or you have some body smoke check the evap system to find the leak

Thank you for your advice- is this something I could fix myself if the I can find the area that's leaking? Or is the evaporation system best left to professionals?

First you need to identity the area where the leak is coming from, so you will have to put gas in it. Is the leak coming from behind the rear wheel or is it under the rear seat area.

I would try a new gas cap. I had the seal on one fail a few years ago and it throws a code. Then don't top off the tank when filling up. Just go to the first click. Cheap fix

It looks like it's under the rear seat area- a steady drip, up to about a quart, and then it stops leaking. No drips on the driveway at all; only at the gas station when I'm filling up. It's illogical how this is happening!

Absolutely not! A gas leak is a safety problem risking fire. A gas leak is never acceptable under any circumstances; the OP is right that it must be repaired.

If it's under the rear seat area, check the routing of hoses. A cracked hose or fitting on top of the tank may be the problem. Look around the sides of the tank for visual evidence of fuel running down the sides - there should be tracks. If the tank has to be dropped, do it - you can't live with this situation.

It appears that the leak is coming from where the filler pipe enters the tank- looks like the seal or seam has been scraped. Easy fix or major problem?
