hey guys..
so some arse wipe musta put something on my hood...then slid it off.......
so I have hairline scratches, like 6, 5 inches long..... that my fingernail can feel...but barely!
I know about detailing a bit, Im not a pro......and I used 2500 wet paper w/ medium effort.....then meguiar 105, then 205....w/ a PC DA
it seems as tho 2500 on this bimmer is not much more than clay..maybe a wee bit more.....paint is ultra smooth now....buffed out well....and scratches are like 60% better..
should I go 2000 or 1500...or just go harder w/ 2500.....Im skeered.
Better to try 2000 next. It's the least aggressive first rationale.
John
is that just reasoning?.....
or have u done this stuff?
Done it many times.
I use the Meguiar's wet/dry paper and have 3000 and 2000 paper on hand.
When I do small areas, I'll cut the paper into small strips and wrap them around a pink pearl eraser. A water bottle sprayer in one hand, the eraser/sandpaper in the other and frequent squirts keeps the work area wet.
I'll use the 2000 until the scratches are gone (visual inspection and I'll use a magnifying glass to check. My eyes are old.) then use the buffer if the area to correct is large. Hand tools if the area is small.
I'll use M105 or M101 then follow with M205 or just go with ScratchX 2.0 if the area is really small.
Menzerna / Jescar Powerlock to top.
Hope that helps and don't be shy if you need specific details.
cool..........thnx
I enjoy this detail work, but I dont want to ruin a nice 99 arctic silver coupe....lol
I understand and that's why i suggested the 2000 grit rather than the 1500 for the next step. Sort of like the medical credo of 'do no harm'. On the off chance the 2000 grit can't remove the scratch, then step down to the 1500 but the 2000 will keep more of your clearcoat intact.
Maybe post a pic when you're done.
I hear that....
.....Ill try to post pics, yes
thnx!
so here are the pics on drvrs side hood that were scratched,.....
I worked the horiz surface of hood w/ 2500 grit, and 105 compound for about 15 mins.........didnt use alot of pressure...just a quick effort....and the work didnt do much overall to scratch appearance
also upon expecting car this am, I see "inside" of front spoiler lip got crazy surface scratches as well.....very strange......all this is new since we moved.......
Oh!
I cannot fit my DA into that horizontal area on the spoiler.....can I use manual hand compound/polishing to rub out 2500/2000 grit marks?

Might there be a cat trying to get up onto the car? Some of those scratches look like the work of a cat. Not all, but the vertical ones.
Sure you can use a scratch remover/compound by hand.
I used an older version of the Hi Temp scratch remover (link below) to remove a key scratch on the front fender, front door, and half of a sliding door on a company van by hand. The Hi Temp scratch remover on a terry towel corner took forever but it worked just fine. The key scratch was only in the clear, not through the clear, not through into the paint, not into the undercoat.

I bet ScratchX 2.0 would work too.
I never thought of a cat?........and there are a few around....hmmmm....
OK......Im on it....
big thnx
update to follow
John
I ended up going thru some real life stuff and never got back to the coupe until today.....
I used "hand" pads by Lake or was it CSS? and the spoiler scratches came out w/ M105!...cool
I have not gone back to the hood as of yet.
