I bought my car in New Jersey and live in New York.
Little did I know there is a new Tinted Window ruling to pass inspection and I have to get the tint from the window removed.
I also found out there are no holes for my front license plate and the back plate holes are in the wrong place. While I immediately accept the car was an impulse buy and maybe I should have been more diligent in my understanding of the purchase, I thought I would share my experience.
I looked on YouTube and the instructions to remove the tint looks doable and there are a bunch of no hole bracket options. I think it is about $200 to fix from a local auto body shop.
Its freaking winter and I am buying my way through this.
How is the rear plate location not up to code? Surely its still the factory location?
NYC socialism at it's finest
The holes just don’t line-up, the are on the sides as opposed to two on top and bottom.
Craziness. Here in Ohio, we have laws in place for tint but the police really don't mess with people anymore.
Yeah, removing tint is no fun but not hard. The front two are rather quick and painless with a razor blade and some water/dish soap lubricant.
The back window with it having the defrost is just another hurdle. GooGone(Gone is citrus based, not GoofOff as it's petroleum based) and a sponge on one side and the fabric screen on the other. I was told a long time ago that WD-40 works as well but the smell of that stuff makes me nauseous.

Go to indy inspection place and pay a little extra to get it passed. I know plenty of people that do it to keep their tint
I had my Z4 windows tinted to go with my black car. Wished I'd gone darker. I'm here in Ga, and have a letter from a dermatologist which makes limousine legal for me I was worried about nighttime visibility, I don't drive it at night though.
I got my tint removed, license plates installed and fully inspected. Finally legal. I learn new things everyday about this car. The whole thing is interesting.
I am such a vain and shallow person. I can’t believe how many great compliments from people I get from driving this machine. It is the least expensive car I have ever bought but looks great. It is a classic and I love it.
Lot’s of little headaches in purchasing, fixing and learning. The beeping when it goes below 37 degrees scared me!!!
Do you just need the bracket for the rear license plate?
Photbucket looking to make extra money......
They got license plate brackets from a local dealer, drilled holes and secured the plates. Funny thing is I got license plate brackets that have the name of an official BMW Dealership vs the little hole in the wall shop I bought the car.
