In the morning when first starting out, the car goes in reverse normally, but after shifting to drive the car don't move forward until reaching about 1800RPM or so. Once it gets going it seems to shift normally, and after stopping at a light, it starts moving normally. It continues to work normally despite stopping for an hour or so. The problem repeats after sitting overnight. I'm thinking of having the transmission fluid and filter changed. Any other thoughts or suggestions?
We agree on performing a fluid and filter change,as it is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to refresh this transmission.
The symptoms you describe may be caused by low fluid levels-old worn or contaminated fluid, or wrong fluid.
The one caution I must stress is you must be certain of the transmission installed, to properly determine the spec of fluid needed.
You need to determine whether you have a A5S325Z or A5S360R / A5S390R transmission.
Its a known issue. The problem lies within the C1 clutch pack. The tolerances are too loose in cold weather and fluid pressure bleeds off. There is a TSB to address this issue by reprogramming to increase line pressure, but that has mixed results. Same with a fluid change. Sometimes the combo does solve it.
Its always good habit to put the car in drive while holding the brake until the rpms drop first thing in the morning.
Thanks to both of you for your insight. I'm going to have the transmission serviced Monday and I'll ask about the TSB.
The car is actually in Port Charlotte FL, so it's certainly not been cool the past few weeks since I got the car. I see I need to fix my location for this site.
“Cool” is relative. Engine oil can get up to 250*F under the right conditions. Coolant temps in an E46 are typically in the 95*C to 100*C range.
I got a transmission service kit from ECS Tuning, so now I need to find someone to do the service. It's certainly not something I want to do in my driveway. At home in NY I have a lift and all kinds of tools available in our shop, here I have nothing. I'm in the Fort Meyers / Port Charlotte area of FL. Does anyone know some body that can help me?
Thanks; Howard
Theres a BMW TSB on this issue that involved reprogramming the transmission. Ive performed this numerous times and it fixes 99% of them.
