Is it a bad idea to buy the last MY of a car before a major redesign?

I once read a claim that build quality declines in the last 1 or 2 model years before a major redesign of a car. I don't remember exactly was stated, but it was along the lines of lower quality materials being used, not for the major mechanical systems but rather interior stuff. Like door panels get flimsier, or sound deadening materials are left out where they were used in previous MY's.

I'm not saying I believe it, it's just something I read once.
Curious what're ppl's reaction to that?

Reason I'm asking is, my WRX's engine has recently died so Im probably buying a new car soon.

The BMW 3 is at the top of my list, and would probably a 2018 order since I can't find anything on lots with a manual trans.

And if the next generation 3 looks like the pictures I've seen, then I have zero interest in it.

It's the other way around, actually. The last year or two are the best - all the bugs and problems have been found and you will have fewer problems. And often, the manufacturer will give some incentives (either money or option bundles etc) to keep sales up. Look at the E91/E93 335is, for instance.

    ^^ this.

It's probably the best time to get really good discounts. For example, just about a month ago they were practically giving away '17 X3's that were in stock to make room for the new 2018's coming in.

Would agree that the last year of a body style is rock solid. I’ve purchased 2 cars that were the last year of their body style and both ended up being great cars that lasted.

Maybe. Not the case if the tech in the last MY of prior gen is outdated, or the design is tired. When I got my F30, I didn't even look at the Audi A4 because it was the last MY; not interested.

3 series MY18 got some nice upgrades that it is actually a good buy. My '18 340 feels familiar but much different from my MY13 335. New all digital console, iDrive 6, the B58 engine and even better electric assisted steering, the feeling is sports mode is just great.

Thanks, mryakan. I've been wondering how you enthusiasts like the later 340i as I am thinking about getting one, maybe a lease assumption or such like.

PS Just clicked on your photo album, wow, nice 340i!

Thanks. I am loving it, although picking up a car in Canadian winter is not great. Can't see the car clean for more than minutes. Still a blast in dry and snow.
