E24 633: M62 swap or turbo?

My friends,
I have a '79 633csi that runs smooth but I'm feeling the need for more than 177hp. I'm considering an M62 (e39 540i) swap versus a turbo. I hear turbos do well in this car but I hate lag and want throttle accuracy. Also, VANOS or no? Any and all feedback is welcome. I want a moderately fast canyon cruiser out of this E24, and will also eventually need to change the 4speed manual for a new box (which?).

For something moderately quick, cheap and reliable I would go with a m62tu and swap the intake with a less restrictive non vanos intake for better air flow and more power. As far as turbo'ing goes, m30's do make great power and depending on your set-up and size of turbo. You can definitely build one with a great powerband and minimal lag.

That being said have you looked into any other bmw motors? If money isnt an issue I'd look into swappng an s54 and if that isnt enough, you can always add FI to that.

You can pick an entire M109 turbo setup for about $1000. That is by far the easiest, most cost effective way to increase your horse power.
