Need to replace my 98 M3 DME

Can I use any E36 ODB2 DME? Or do I need a specific part # one?

It needs to have the same part number as the one you have. But you'll need to get the DME aligned with your EWS, otherwise the car won't start. But if you're like me & you no longer need EWS in your life, give this a look:

I got one that's the same part #. Shop will align the EWS for me. Can you have two dme's aligned? Or when you align a "new" one it forgets the other one?

As far as I know you can, since the EWS just needs to "see" the correct information from the DME (matching part #, VIN, and a "start signal").

You can have both DME's recoded to match so that it works with the EWS system.

However for a track car you might want to think about doing EWS deletes to them for ease of convenience since the modules do go bad over time.

I had mine deleted at no extra cost through a company that specializes in this stuff when I had mine replaced (They also test and repair them). They can also do burble tunes, increased Rev Limit and all that jazz.
PM me if you you're interested.

I ended up not needing the dme, so now I have it as a spare. It might make sense to have ews deleted on both my dme's though. I wouldn't want to mess with the tune that's on my current dme. Can just the ews be removed?

Yeah the EWS can be deleted, first it has to be coded out the DME then you just jump the pins for the starter on the EWS2 Harness.
I had mine done by ECUDoctors on my dooorifto car.
