2004 M3 - Light with ! and Gear around it is on, won't start or shift from neutral

Hi.

Just recently I was picking up my son from a friends and I pulled up the parking brake and moved car to Neutral while running. My son got in the car and when it was time to take off, the car would not shift to neutral. I turned the car off, noticed a new light on, looks like a gear with an ! in the middle. Car then would NOT start nor would it shift from neutral. I check the hood to make sure it was latched, it was.
Looking for advise. Thank you for your time.

Obviously there's a problem with the SMG transmission. There's no way to know for sure until you have someone competent read and interpret the stored fault codes.

Correct, read codes with a BMW oriented scanner in the SMG computer. It may be simple, but most of the time, the SMG will cost you.

For this is the only way to know. It can be the stupid hood switch which is a couple of bucks, to the accumulator which is a lot more. Do not just throw parts at it for it will get very expensive in the end.
