I am reviewing my failed smog test and noticed the technician put I have a 2.5L, 6 cylinder engine and not a 1.9L, 4 cylinder. Would that effect the test or is it universal across all cars in how it is done? I know reading on this if you go in the wrong gear, that can effect the test results. I will call a smog place tomorrow and ask if no one has the answer.

For what reasons did you fail???
That is probably just a label and nothing that will effect the actual test, but you should call anyway.

The RPM meter will be off since it should sense a 4 cylinder fire vs a 6 You should see 15 MPH at ~1800 RPM for a 6. The SMOG limits are printed on the paper and are close for all cars. So yes, what values did you fail? OBD II cars are not always SMOG tested. The DMV will instead, take your computer readings for errors. A 97 car may not be compliant. SO were you put on the tread mill for the test?

HC limits are 85 for a i6 at 15mph. The other limit values are almost the same. There are a few tricks to help pass by lowering the HC (hot CAT), since you are so close but you may have a small problem.
Run a bottle of CRC GTP (guaranteed to pass).
Run premium gas. You can also change your pre-cat (upstream) oxygen sensor if it hasn't been done in over 60k miles, get the Denso at rockauto.com its a good price $44
You can also check for vacuum leaks (smoke test if you can).
