    Strange HVAC issue

My 2002 E39 530i has a baffling issue with the HVAC control panel. I've searched but yet to find a solution to this problem. The HVAC control panel is blank and the Blower fan is on high. This usually happens when the key fob is used to unlock the car. I immediately unplug the FSU and the panel remains blank. The System goes to max heat and if the FSU is left plugged in I it will be like a blast furnace. After driving for maybe 5 to 10 minutes, the display returns to normal. I then plug the FSU connector back in and have normal operation, sometimes for days and/or even weeks at a time. I have replaced the FSU 3 times and the problem always seems to come back? Any ideas? Thanks..

I've had both FSU and Climate Control Unit go out on my 2002 530i at different times.

When CCU (or HVAC as you say) was blank and fan was on high, in my case that was CCU. I got used CCU off eBay and swapped circuit board into my CCU since my plastic faceplate was in much better condition than Ebay one. It's much easier to just swap whole CCU if you get one in good cosmetic condition (approx $80-$100)

When the FSU went, the CCU still had all pixels and data, but CCU just couldn't control fan speed.

So I'd guess CCU in your case. This was confirmed in reading ton of threads noting that blank CCU is CCU, NOT FSU.

It's a bit of a bitch to get CCU out without marring dash. Check DIY vids.

Also I got FSU from FCPeuro to get lifetime warranty since it does seem to be recurrent issue.

    Thanks Quantico,
I don't have a problem replacing the part as much as I don't understand how it is an intermittent occurrence. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason for this problem and when it occurs. It returns to normal function after a few minutes of driving. I will find another CCU and replace it though. Thanks again.

    4 BMWs.
it's actually quite easy to get CCU out. Remove MID and push it out from rear.
