Hi friends,
My 2005 318Ci with 140,000 on the clock has failed the NCT (the Irish equivalent of the MOT) on emissions. The exact results are as follows:
Low idle CO 0.38% (fail = >0.30%)
High idle Lambda 0.95 (fail = >0.97<1.03)
High idle CO 1.73% (fail = >0.20%)
They also told me that the lambda sensor was broken, but I don't know if that would be causing the other failures (the high idle CO figure is particularly high).
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions as to what might be causing this?
Thanks!

Well it is running rich, that is normally what cause a high CO2. So you have several options:
1 - Replace the oxygen sensor. How old is it? If you don't know, then go ahead and replace it then, otherwise it should have been replace 20k miles ago.
2- Dirty or clogged air filter. This is a normal replacement item on Inspection-II
3- Dirty or bad MAF. Clean it first before you replace it.
4- Bad MAP which you don't have.
5- Bad ECT sensor. This would send a SES light to come on.
So what codes do you have?

As "dworthy" pointed out a list of possible caused. We can help you better if you have the engine code, else we can do some guessing work.
1. Clean the mass airflow sensor (MAF) with electronic cleaner, or MAF spray. No CEL code if it is just a little dirty. It is an expansive part
2. Replace dirty air filter - visually inspect the filter. It is a cheap part to replace, and won't give CEL code
3. O2 sensor - it is an maintenance item. It should throw CEL code. It is standard price for any vehicle, not consider expansive
4. ECT sensor - trigger CEL code
5. Cracked vacuum hoses - all old BMW will need to replace their vacuum hoses by now. If you haven't done so, do it. If you done some, then check for other cracked hoses, especially at back of engine block where 2nd vacuum pump is connected to, as well as upper intake boot
6. Both upper & lower intake boot are commonly crack - remove them and inspect crack
