'98 740il - Transmission question

I had the tranny rebuilt a little over a year ago. Works find...except...when I went to drive recently I noticed that when the car started an "M" showed (manual mode). If I put the car into Drive and then press the switch next to the shifter to the "A" position it goes back to automatic. I've done some searches but can't find any info on why it would default to "M" on startup. Hoping someone here has seen this and can offer some guidance.

Could be a bad A/M switch. Not uncommon for some spilled beverage to damage the switch.
You could try unplugging it, and can even substitute in the sunroof switch for a temporary test.

Appears that the switch is called: EH-Gearbox Switch on Center Console (A/M on Switch) Used (EBay) appear to be mid $30 range. One new for $60 and OEM ~$100. Used or new?

First test it to see if it's the issue, then you can see about buying one. I would think you could find them a whole lot cheaper than that.
