No gears

Hi guys strange one last night. Car was driving perfectly fine. As I parked it on my drive it got stuck in 2nd gear. Managed to get it out of 2nd gear but won't go in to any gears now. And this is when the car is off. I had a little look round and found people asking about this but only whilst the car is driving not when it's switched off. The car wasn't making any funny noises or giving any indication of problems as I said literally as pulling to a stop it just wouldn't select any gears
The gear stick itself feels very tight now

how can you think that mentioning if it's an automatic or manual isn't important

Thanks for your utterly useless reply. I thought it was quite obvious in the description I was talking about a manual. Seen as an automatic doesn't have a gearstick it has a lever. Anyway the problem was with the detent pins for anybody that experiences this problem they have a useful answer to read now
