Thread: S54 in an E30... I need S54 guidance.

    S54 in an E30... I need S54 guidance.

    So my swap is coming along but I am getting a cylinder 3 misfire. I have swapped plugs and coil no change still cylinder 3. Any suggestions. It doesn't do it at idle, i can let it idle for 20 min no issue. But it does it when I put a load on it. I have looked for vacuum leaks and the only thing I found was the evap recirc solenoid which I capped. I am thinking about getting a new maf new coils and new boots. Any other things I need to look for. i have fresh oxys, which are still showing codes. That is what is making me think its the MAF. I get almost no change to the way the car idles without the maf connected. The plug looks clean and dry and looks to be firing appropriately. Any suggestions from the S54 gurus?

    What are you using to watch live data? Can you even do that? Is the P0303 the only code populating into the system?

    As you said you check the vacuum lines, did you get a professional smoke test completed?

    No smoke test yet as I just got it running. I have the inpa software but that’s it. I am going to check compression asap. It idles normally and drives fine for like 5 min but after that It developed the misfire and responds very strangly to throttle I think it , bogging down and not wanting to rev at all. I have to restart the car to get another 5 min drive time. I has intermittent oxy errors but oxys are brand new.

    Make sure ur ur o2 sensors r correct. The post r different than the pre cAts.

    The values in inpa remain fixed for secondaries so I believe they are coded that way.

    I tried to swap them but they physically won’t fit in each other’s plugs? I know that the shorter one goes to Bank one and the longer to Bank two but I am not 100% on the wiring colors for the plugs. I just assumed since they only plugged into one plug that they couldn’t be backwards.

    If you can connect into INPA, then you can read live data. What I would do is log it as you drive, and when it bogs down, review what the DME is getting when you get back to the garage. If you are not sure, you can always post the video up and lets us take a look at it.

    Compression check complete all were within a few lbs of each other.. Ran inpa and looked at live values it shows no volatage for lambda 2 when Ideling. Checked all the grounds and connections all is good. Lambda 1 shows voltage in range but 2 is zero. It is possible I have a shitty oxy harness? Or a dead oxy right out the box?

    Swapped oxy for #2 into #1 spot and still shows zero after 5 seconds. Must be an issue with wiring or DME. Any suggestions?

    You would have to either trace the harness thru the whole loom, or do a voltage drop test.

    You should see the voltage fluxate on both sensors, so it can be a wire pinched under the cover.

    Do I need to have my post cat O2 sensors installed or plugged in. I know that tunes that remove them still have you install them. I have my sitting on the work bench. Could these be causing my issue?

    Maybe, but if the tune takes them out and puts a simulator in there, I don't think there would be a need.

    The tune puts a value in but I am wondering if the wiring requires the load of the sensors or the completion of the curcuits.

    Good question, as I never really messed with something like this before. I would contact the person/company you got the tune from and ask if the sensors would be needed.

    I have the Epic tune. No secondary O2 sensor required. From experience, however, it is essential to have the correct primary sensors installed. On initial startup I had the wrong ones, and it ran like crap.

    Ok so I got it mostly sorted. The Oxys were backwards at the actual headers. The only remaining issue I am getting is a low reading on lambda 2. I had to put that oxy after the colector due to the fact that the headers factory location is so tight to the floor of the e30. Would this be causing lower reading it being say 6-8 inches further down stream and after the collector?

    Got it sorted brand new oxygen sensor was dead right out of the box causing the whole issue replaced it with the old one works perfect. Now I just need to get some miles on this s54 so that I can spin I over 5000 RPM

    You know that you are not the first as of late to report issues with Bosch items. It seems that they are more worried about profit vers reliability anymore. I wonder what happened to the German work ethic? Oh shoot most of that stuff isn't made in Germany anymore.
