He should still be able to align it, but you'll only have 2/3 of the clamping force to hold it in place.

Gave away my BMWs, driving a VW and an Audi now.

Probably won't hold but try if. I think you may need to have a new section welded in. People have done it before when their rtab pockets tire out.

Anyway to retap the hole where it’s nut and bolted?

That is worth looking into. Not sure how much meat is in there. If you do some searching for torn rtab pocket or similar terms you might find something.

What should I tell the tech when I go for alignment tomorrow?
I've already answered that. If the "top hat" brim of the old insert is missing washering it out would be able to sit the pocket level.

Not if you have a loose nut and the original insert is gone, you have not answered if the original insert is there.

This is very easy to answer with either a picture of the 3 bolt holes or just looking and then answering if there is a raised boss around each of the three holes.

You cannot re-tap the hole to the same size if the thread is stripped, you would have to helicoil. It would be a lot easier to get a new insert (or from salvage) and weld it in. Otherwise you typically have to drill and tap bigger which with a bigger diameter bolt could limit adjustment
