    Question 95 vs 96+ M3 Stock Exhaust

    IMG_20171019_195608.jpg

So I pulled my 95 M3 exhaust off the car because it was rusted out and I attempted to patch it but i think she is far gone. I have 96 M3 exhaust and wanted to see what difference it will make once I install it on my 95 M3. Will it sound the same? Will I lose or gain any horsepower?

I believe the 1996+M3 cat-back exhaust should be a bolt-on exchange, in spite of the fact they are different p/ns.
If anything, the 1996+M3 cat-back flows more volume, sound should be similar.

You have them, do they appear to fit?

I had the 96 M3 exhaust on my 95 325is, its currently out of service so I took it off to put on my 95 M3. It will bolt up fine, I was wondering if it will sound different since the pipes are larger.

IIRC, the '96+ is double walled pipe vs. the single walled '95. I don't believe that there is a performance difference, although it should be slightly heavier.

Edit: Net-net. It's plug and play. Run it. If you add an O2 bung to a '96+ mid pipe, you can gain power there.

    Actually, add a Pre-cat merge w/single bung

Offers a blending of FWD bank and AFT bank exhaust gasses, not that signals for fuel are that refined, blended exhaust monitoring is preferred.

While I theoretically agree with you, adding an O2 bung to one side is a well proven increase. I don't know if anyone has tested for the impact of a merge in that location.

Replacing the 1995M3 cat-section Pre-cat merge with something along the lines of a Dr. Gas X-pipe with a bung is probably better than the 1996+ cat-section.

Quite possibly, but I can't tell someone that there are proven and consistent gains there. OBDII midsection + bung is proven power.

Bumping this thread again so that not create a new one. So it appears each exhaust is backwards compatible between s50 vs s52, but is there a physical or size difference between the two axlebacks? I can’t tell from the picks but is the s50 muffler less fat than the stock s52?

    95 vs 96+ M3 Stock Exhaust

The S52 axle back flows slightly better.

Dinan’s original E36 Perfomance Exhaust was a 1995 axle back that was opened up, partially gutted and welded shut.
The OBDII head pipes flow slightly better than the OBDI cast iron head pipes and the OBDII catalytic converter eliminates the OBDI pre-catalyst merge. But, requires sorting out the single pre-catalytic converter sensor.

OBDII head pipes house a pair of ‘pre-cat’ O2 sensors, the OBDII mid-pipe houses two ‘post-cat’ O2 sensors.
