Hi guys,
I bought an 530d M-sport estate a few month ago.
Only problem I have is very loud, thumping noise when driving over a bump.
I alredy removed almost everything I could and drove, still present.
So far cant even imagine what can be the cause.
First I thought it is the stupid opening glass in trunk, as it was moving and wasnt firm. Adjusted that to be very firm.
2. Removed trunk plastic etc still present.
I will raise the car tommorow, and see if something is hitting it from the bottom. But nothing was loose when I checked it last time.
My catless downpipe should come anyday, maybe it is exhaust that is the cause.

+1 on the subframe bushings.
+1 on the subframe bushings. But if you have a subwoofer in the back passenger side and it is loose it will make a clunking sound, also make sure the battery brackets are tight and the welds have not broken.

It doesnt sound like the subframe I think.
More like the trunk is not tight and is banging, but who knows. I will check the bushings.

do you have slide out trunk floor? these can clunk if there is not weight on them.

Ours was a combination of worn subframe bushings and a mis adjusted rear hatch latch. ours needed tightening., If the subframe bushings have over a 100k miles on them and haven't been changed, they probably need them..

Check to see if this guy is not loose. That is what was causing noise in my trunk.
Dont have the slide out trunk, its the lifting one.
It does have 306tkm on it, so bushings are probably dead. But one of our mechanic who also have E39 which is also M-sport but his one is individual without exterior M-sport bumpers, said his car drives much worse, and he does have bushings gone, but still no clunks :/
I think it might be the trunk, but I adjusted it a few times so far. Have to take a look maybe cd changer or something is loose.
Btw guys, is there poly bushings on sale? Or just the rubber ones?

Thats the subwoofer. Mine makes clunking sounds if I do not tighten it down "completely".
Powerflex makes urethane subframe bushings for the e39 touring. https://powerflexusa.com/E395Series97-03.aspx

Is it pretty simple to tighten this? I am pretty sure my subframe bushings are shot at 222k miles and I am replacing those soon. But I think I should check other stuff, since it sounds and looks like that is what's making noise, but it could just be that's whats vibrating due to the bad bushings...

My bump was the battery tray. The front left weld gave out. Had a shop weld it back together:

Its the subframe bushings.
Sedans don't have the issue.
Its hard to ID always from underneath but trust us... its a TOURING PROBLEM. If the bushings have small cracks in the bottom then they have leaked out all their oil inside and now are flopping all around.
"Meyle HD" bushings are available that are not oil filled so won't do this. That is NOT regular Meyle - if it doesnt have the gold HD seal on the box its not the right part. The powerflex only became available recently so mine are the Meyle HD and they do the job fine.

My spare tire caused bumping noise. I removed the tire and then realized the sound had stopped. Grabbed some upholstery foam, like in seat cushions and placed under the tire, fixed the noise problem.

You have to love this one. Now that problem was caused by:
A. Forgot to remove battery hold down bolt before removing (forcing) the battery out of tray
B. "Ok, Hans the bracket is in, you weld it and then let it go on to painting" Overheard on the factory floor just before the Friday shift ended....
C. "Lets see if we can make this car jump on the next hill...."
One of my former cars (70's US domestic) came from the factory without any body sealer around the taillight panels so you could actually see daylight from inside the trunk around the lights. New car so never hit but never finished either. You have to love old factory fit finish and quality controls. "We don't need no stinking second lookers. I do a good enough job!"
