Hello,
This is a feeler as I have been looking for a sport touring for a while and finally got a chance to buy one and restore it the way I want to. Unfortunately this idea of owning a clean E39 touring was something I just wanted to cross off the bucket list.
I purchased my 01 525iT with 134k miles. It needed a few items sorted out but me being an enthusiast I went ahead and threw pretty much the maintenance book at it. I like to work on these cars more than anything as a hobby. I bought it to commute long distances between Queens and Connecticut, roughly 135 miles per day so I needed to make sure she was reliable.
So she is in a pretty reliable state as she sits and would require virtually no financial input and you can enjoy the car as it sits.

The parts above add up to nearly $4,000 not including labor.
The good:
So essentially suspension is sorted, cooling system is sorter, breather system is sorted, brakes are sorted. This is a car that will do another 50-60k miles without much input. Clean car interior and out. Tires have about 8/32 but are 5 or 6 years old. All matching bridgestone all season tires. I just drove it to FL from NY without issues and back. The sum of the above parts replaced. All options work. No seat twist. No bleeding mirrors. Moonroof works without issues. No water ingress like on some cars of this vintage. Interior is not beat up.
The not so good:
Cosmetically it is a 16 year old car. Some minor dings and scratches here and there. Hood grills have been pushed in while previous owner had the car :/. I lost 2 BMW logos from the style 5 wheel center caps in the last month.(New roundel logos purchased) There is a minor vibration that comes and goes at around 75mph. Slightly annoying but everything is new on the car in terms of the suspension on the car except for the front struts and tires. The front struts are bilstein B6 but were replaced by previous owners. They do not seem to be leaking but I do not know when they were done. I drive it daily at roughly 75 80 mph without issues and do 135 miles a day. While cleaning the car and taking out the baby seat the right rear seat belt got stuck open. Other than that I really enjoy driving the car. The previous owner had installed an aftermarket nav unit in place of the factory nav unit. I do not know why. This unit works decently the speakers are very clear and I like the bluetooth connectivity to my phone so I can listen to digital stations. I do not like the fact that some novice did the work of running the fakra cable and ran it over the rear tunnel. Also whoever ran the rear view camera broke some tabs in the tailgate bezels so they rattle over big bumps.
My plans were to buy another wagon next year with black interior and just swap them and fix the little odds and ends to make it a perfect E39 touring.
The reason for the short sale is not profit but rather the love affair with many cars. I love the E39 but I no longer am in love with driving a sporty stiff BMW in NYC and commuting 130 miles plus, it gets boring real quick. I also do not want to abuse this car to make it feel like it has 200k more miles than it has because it will feel like that once I really start putting the miles on. I want it to go to a good home and an enthusiast somewhere preferably away from poor roads. I will be seeking to get a Lexus RWD sedan to replace this car and make the daily commute a bit more comfortable.
Clean title is in my name ready for the next person
I am asking $8000 ... Price Drop
$7500 or best offer
With this price you will get a laptop with ISTAD INPA PROGMAN etc basically all the tools needed to communicate with most BMWs which is perfect for the enthusiast.
PPIs are welcome locally.

Very Nice. Good luck with it!
GLWS! I saw the CL ad and while the car is super clean, you are asking the price for a manual touring. BaT had one about a year or so ago that sold for a mint, but they are rare.

If I end up keeping it I will eventually do a M5 swap with black interior.
The price really reflects buying one of these and literally throwing the maintenance book at it. Roughly 4k in parts at a shop plus another 30-50% in margin and an equivalent of that in labor would make bringing one to be in this mechanical shape completely not worth it.
I wish I kept my old 02 525it .. that was a 5 speed and I had swapped a M53B30 into it which made the car a lot more fun.
But a proper M5 swap would be fun
