Fuel injection wiring has been modified

Any ideas why someone would modify fuel injection harness on left side of engine using butt connectors? Is a plug missing?

And what are some good ways to wrap wiring harness? Would be nice to shrinkwrap everything but I dont think I would have any success removing plugs to slip on shrinkwrap. Thanks,

My wiring harness was not nearly as bad as yours but it is typical for the outer jacket to crack and this can damage the wires inside if unattended. I re-wrapped my entire harness in silicone self fusing tape. It was a long process of removing the old jacket and then re-wrapping but the end result as good as new. I found it a lot easier to remove the old jacket by scoring the outside with a utility knife (careful not to punch through) and then heating it up with a heat gun to soften it. I was then able to tear it off. At room temp it is hard and brittle and you'll end up with pieces flying all over the place as you try to cut it away.

I added an inline connector at the alternator to facilitate disconnecting the harness for future repairs. Not sure about your butt connectors, perhaps the harness was damaged.

+1 on the self vulcanizing tape. It is also available at HomeDepot for less money. When I had my engine fire years ago, the complete harness was rewrapped with this tape, and it is holding up perfectly.

Self-vulcanizing tape sounds like the right product to use. Thanks!

The loose wires from fuel injection harness appear to run underneath car if I am not mistaken. Do these wires run back to the DME? I haven't had time this evening to look at a diagram of wiring.

Yes, the entire engine wire loom runs back to the computer banks on the passenger side. It runs along the firewall and the rear of the motor.
