The E28 body style of the 5-series was launched in 1981 and lasted until 1988. Later in the production run, the 3.5L engine was introduced in various forms from the M5, 535, 535iS, and M535i. Each of these had different packages of performance and cosmetics. This example was originally ordered as a 535i and was delivered new by a BMW dealer in California. For the first 20-years of its life, it lived in Northern California with what we believe to be the 1st owner. It was then sold to another local enthusiast in 2007.
This 2nd owner decided to do a restoration on the car as well as give it more of an M5-look. Either the local BMW dealer or Palo Alto Bimmer performed most of the work. Well over $20,000 was invested on the following items:
New windshield with factory BMW Sekurit part
M5 front and rear control arms
M5 front and rear Bilstein sport shocks/struts
European H4 Hella headlights
M5 front spoiler with Hella fog lights
Upgraded 17” BBS RC090 17x8/factory E39 BMW wheels (2 sets)
M5 full power front seats and rear seats
New factory dashboard
New seat belts and clips
Upgraded Alpine radio with satellite
New side mirrors
Rear view mirror with map lights
All new rubber seals throughout the car
M-steering wheel
Short shifter with leather M shift knob
Replaced all water and power steering hoses
New water pump and radiator
New alternator
New brake master cylinder
New clutch kit
Replaced all brake pads and rotors
Also, Eurotech in San Carlos, California performed a full glass out repaint of the car in its original factory color. This was a high quality bare metal repaint.
In 2015, it was sold to a Northwest enthusiast/collector. For the last couple years, he has used the car as a part-time daily driver and put on about 4k-miles. During this time, he invested nearly $5,000 on the following services with a top local BMW specialist:
Replaced misc. light lenses
New electric seat switches and seat wiring harness
Engine tune-up/service including spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter
Brake system flush
Complete new factory exhaust system, catalytic converter, and hangars
New engine sound pad
Oil service
New Pirelli winter tires
Transmission and differential fluid flush with Redline
Cooling system flush
Custom Coco floor mats
Furthermore, the following services were just performed within the last 6-months/500-miles:
Replaced clutch slave
New clutch master cylinder and clutch hoses
Fresh oil service and filter
New wheel center caps and wrench
Crank position sensors
Main and fuel pump relays
New exhaust tips
New ECU
Repaired idle control valve
It is clear that each owner truly loved this BMW and gave it the proper care. The exterior looks fantastic. The paint has a great shine to it and has minimal signs of use. There are a couple spots on the trunk and passenger c-pillar where tree sap has etched the paint (see pics). There is also a chip on the sunroof and slight scratch by the trunk lock (see pics). The original aluminum bumpers are in very good shape. All the glass is in great shape as well. The BMW/BBS 17” wheels show light signs of use and are wearing new Pirelli winter tires. The spare set of BBS wheels (see pics) are available for an additional fee. They are exactly the same as the silver ones on the car, but have gray painted centers and are wearing older Michelin tires. The chassis is very dry with no signs of damage or rust. There is a leak from the hydraulic brake booster that is also shared by the power steering. The system operates fine, but if the car sits for a while, it will leave a small puddle.
The interior is equally as nice. The M sport seats look great and show minimal wear. There are no tears or rips. The dash is perfect with no cracks or warping. The headliner has a small tear on the sunroof panel as well as some discoloration on the C-pillars (see pics). The door panels and carpet look very fresh. All the gauges function properly including the computer. The A/C blows extremely cold and has been recently serviced. The window switches and sunroof all work. The rear windows are slow to go up. The multi-function power seat buttons all work except the passenger side headrest. Also, the thigh support buttons do not operate on either seat. All the interior and exterior lights operate properly. The heated seats also work.
This 535i drives fantastic. It starts easily and idles smoothly. The power feels great with excellent low-end throttle response. The car feels incredibly agile for a 4-door sedan. The steering is precise. The brakes have excellent bite with no fading. The shifting is smooth with no grinding or slipping. This BMW would be a perfect “everything” car: vintage tours, car shows, daily use, or even spirited backroad driving.
This E28 comes with extra keys, many service records, original tool kit (freshly restored tools), owner’s manuals, jack, and original spare.
