Hi guys.
So.... i´m new to this wounderful brand of cars and i´m building my first racecar out of a 1997 BMW E36.
Today i really f*cked up or at least i think i did. To weld a rollcage i have stripped the car of all insidetrim. All there is left is the electrical wiring and stuff.
So today i was going to see if it still started after all the teardown. I connected the cluster and turned the ignition on... cluster light up, fuelpump started buzzing then stopped. I turned the key further to crank it over.... CLICK! Nothing happend. I thought... OK.... I´ll try that again... Turned the key off and did the same procedure.... NOTHING. Not even the cluster lights up... Not the fuelpump.. NOTHING... What have i done? Is there any chance to get it running again? Where do i start looking for faults?
Please help if you can..
Best Regards
Anders from Sweden.
Charge the battery.
It is normal for the pump to only run for a second when you turn the key.

Don’t get discouraged brother. Stuff like this happens. I’d suggest that you do a thorough look over of all of the wiring in the car. Make sure nothing was knocked loose, disconnected, or cut while you were stripping the interior. And as Eric93se suggested, check the battery.
How much of the wiring did you remove? Could have disconnected some needed grounds. I'd check the battery voltage first.
Hi again and thanks for all replies. Today I went back to the dungeon and went over all the brown cables (ground right?) I could find. Turns out I had knocked one loose on driverside when I removed the dash. It was located where the dash is bolted from the side. Put it back and turned the key... Wroooom. Now it's back to remove one wire, startup, remove next, startup and so on until I'm satisfied.

I love simple solutions!
Lime Rock Park... the most fun you can have in a mile and a half.
Cheers! Glad to hear the good news man. Hope you didnt lose too much sleep over it
Glad you got it figured out. What are you planning to remove as far as wiring?
It’s never a good idea to go chopping away at wires. Follow them, see what the lead to. There are wire diagrams available for you. If you are looking for any specific wire diagrams of anything feel free to pm me. Also performing continuity tests on wires you’re unsure of would help aswell!
Thanks for the cheers mates. I'm planning to remove as much of the wiring as possible without disturbing the functionality of the car. Since I'm not having any trim left inside beside the dashboard and vent I will remove most of the wiring for lights, interior lights and of course audio. I will also remove fueltank(s) and build a 12 liters tank and place it inside the trunk, most likely where the sparetyre was placed. The plan is to use one of the original fuelpump and wiring. Any one knows if that will be enough fuel pressure for the engine?

why should the fuel pressure change when you still use the same pump?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Isn't there two pumps on a e36? The plan is to use only one of them in the new 12 liter fueltank? But will it be enough?

as far as i'm informed there's one? that thing on the other side is just a fuel level sensor, or am i wrong?
Ok. But since the tank goes over the propshaft, how will the fuel from that one transfer to the engine?

Pretty sure anders is right. There's a pump to send it from one side of the tank to the other. And then a pump to take it to the engine.

One has a white top and one has a blue top. Use the blue top one.
uh no, the pump uses some suction system to pull the fuel over to it's side. google it
So the pump is on the left or right side? If there is a suction going on, then the logic side of the pump should be left? I mean the fuelcap is on the right rear fender so the gasoline should fill up the right tankside, then sucks over to the left side and then pumped to the engine? Or am I thinking wrong here?

Samy is right. One is a pump, the other a fuel level sender.
